Peanut Bowl
Possibly the most fun part of Southsea Skatepark, the Peanut Bowl has been skated for decades by American professional skateboarder and young local alike, always fun, always challenging. This footage is from 1989 with some locals and Sean Goff ripping it up:
Cranes – New Album

Forming in Portsmouth back in the mid 1980s Cranes (a name inspired by the port’s cranes) have helped define both the original Shoegaze and Avant Garde scenes of the late 80s and early 90s but in recent years have developed a more electronic, ethereal dream pop sound, culminating in the awesome 2004 album ’Particles and Waves’. A few weeks ago the band announced a new European tour and a new album that was released on the 13th of this month. The new, self-titled album is also something special.
If you want to catch the band live their last stop of the tour is at Hoxton Square Bar in London on the 29th, sadly there is no homecoming gig!
Check www.cranes-fan.com for more details and Last.fm to have a listen for free to some of their songs.

Local Art & Photography prints

The Pillowman – New Theatre Royal
Ex Southsea skater and all round good guy, the talented Phil Whiteman stars in The Pillowman, a 2003 play by British playwright Martin McDonagh. An especially dark black comedy, it tells the tale of Katurian, a fiction writer living in a police state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories. Scary stuff, go get some dark culture in your veins.
It’s this weekend so get your skates on and book a seat. Click the article for booking info etc.
Cafe Citrus Photography Gallery
Cafe Citrus has for over 10 years been one of the most well known spots on Albert Road and recently they expanded to included a new Photography gallery aimed to showcase local photographic talent in the heart of Southsea. The first show is by Paul Windsor, a local photographer who has travelled the world taking photos of some of the biggest names in music including Oasis, The Clash, Paul Weller, Primal Screen and many others. All of the prints on show are also available as limited edition prints via the gallery’s new website, www.cafecitrusgallery.co.uk. We had a quick look around the gallery over the weekend, it’s well worth a visit and the food downstairs is recommended too.

Spinnaker Tower
Soaring 170 metres above Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, the Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben and has already established itself as a national icon for Britain. Get yourself down to Gunwharf Quays and check out the panoramic views over the city and the Solent. Don’t forget your camera. Oh, and if you’re a Portsmouth resident you get cheap entry if you provide proof.

Vintage Southsea Skatepark articles
Articles about Southsea Skatepark can be hard to come by, and articles from 1988 even more so. I found these on the ‘when we was rad’ website a while back. I remember having the picture of Tommy Guerrero pulling that slob torn out and on my wall for years. Sick.
Support Southsea Skatepark
Southsea Skatepark was established back in 1978 and after all the years it’s been shredded she looks a little worn around the edges, literally. The Southsea Skatepark Users Group and bored have teamed up with Spitfire Skateboard Wheels to help out. Check the flyer in the article for all the info and head over to bored on Albert Road and do your bit.
Love Albert Road Day 08
The second annual Love Albert Road Day was by all accounts a huge success. With an estimated 40,000 people coming and going, our beloved street has never seen so much action. Organiser Ian Parmiter helped put on the no holds barred street event and did a damn fine job. A great day that does not just promote the street, but encourages a sense of community.
