Fairtrade Fortnight – Portsmouth
Fairtrade Fortnight will take place from 23 February to 8 March and there’s lots going on in the city. Two billion people – a third of humanity – still survive on less than £1.50 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too. Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change that aims to tip the balance of trade in favour of poor producers. We all need Fairtrade more than ever and we all have the power to create positive change for people and planet.

Cascades
Every day, there will be a stall in the Cascades that you can visit for more information.
Wine Tasting Evening

There will be stalls, a display of miki Fairtrade fashion, complimentary mini-buffet, and a speaker – Greg Valerio of CRED on Fairtrade and ethical jewellery.
Tickets are £4 in advance and £5 on the door. You can get them from Tourist Information Centres, Portsmouth Central Library, any university catering outlet.
Great banana eating record attempt
6 March, 12 to 3pm.
The idea is a new world record will be set for simultaneous Fairtrade banana eating over a 24 hour period – each participant eating one banana. All over the world, producer groups, Fairtrade colleagues and supporters will be taking part. It’s hoped that this will be in Guildhall Square on 6 March, but you can take part any time until noon on Saturday 7.

Best of luck with your Fairtrade Fortnight events. If there are any groups out there that would like some help organising a Fairtrade event please send me an email – patrick.dodd(at)shared-interest.com.
I work for Shared Interest, the world’s only 100% fair trade lender. We have ambassadors around the country who are eager to help spread the good word about fair trade. We have also developed a ‘Fair Trade Fun Pack’ that is designed to help teach school aged children about fair trade.
