Portsmouth at Night

Claire Sambrook from the http://www.flickr.com/groups/portsmouth_creative_movement/ sent me a link to a Flickr group called Portsmouth at Night, and let me say this, their photos are amazing. Lots of playing with lights, angles and exposures make for some fantastic photography.

Check out all the PAN photography on their Flickr.

Sumo Bank Holiday Banger

This Bank Holiday has lots to offer, just scroll down and check it all out. But what about Sunday, well why don’t you get on down to The Little Johnny Russells and get ready to dance like idiots to some classic all night bangers. You know the score. Put on your dirty vans and get involved on the dancefloor.

Residents Albino Monkey and Handsome Dave Rocker are joined by Rosko Siffredi and Balti Mark of C.O.R fame. Hopefully I’ll have enough energy to get in the mix after getting up stupid early and doing this.

Making a Monster Cycle Map of Portsmouth…

Portsmouth Cycle Forum invites you to “stick one on them”, on their giant cycling map this coming Saturday May 2. It is at Cycle Hampshire Event at the Gunwharf Quays from 10am to 4pm.

The Forum invites all who ride a bike, or who would like to, to stick dots to show the best and the worst things about cycling around Portsmouth. The picture cyclists create together will highlight what to change first, to make cycling better in Portsmouth. Cyclists can add what one thing would make cycling better in Portsmouth.

The monster cycle map is part of Cycle Hampshire 09, launching on 2 May at Gunwharf Quays. Visitors can try-out different types of bikes for free, watch demonstrations, pick up information and a copy of the official Cycle Hampshire, Summer of Cycling events booklet.

John Holland Chairman of PCF says, “The Forum is the voice for more and better cycling in Portsmouth. The monster map will show us where to focus our action, and provide live views to present to the Council. We want more people to safely hop on their bikes and discover the benefits of cycling locally. Over half of all car journeys are less than five miles long. By switching to an easy thirty-minute bike ride, you will save money, find new places, shrink your carbon footprint and get fit too. Portsmouth Cycle Forum is working hard with the City Council to create the best possible cycle routes and facilities. Portsmouth Cycle Forum seeks the backing of all local cyclists who may feel there is nothing they alone can do to improve things.”

Mark Webb – Full English

Effraim has sent us through some more BMX footage, this time of Southsea very own Mark Webb. We did a post on Mark before, a short film entitled Mark by video students from Portsmouth University.

I’m not sure what the background for this footage is, but it’s off the hook. This guy kills it. Check out the slow motion 900 on the quarter pipe. Nuts.

Fresh Legs

Speaking of the upcoming Little Fish show, also playing on Thursday (30th) will be Fresh Legs. With strong ties to Southsea and some new songs (‘Chess’ and ‘House’ now available to listen on their MySpace page) it should be epic. As for Little Fish, also check the Facebook event for the night for more details on Fresh Legs.

Little Fish @ The Little Johnny Russells

Part of the Southsea Fest Warm Up II, LJR’s have Little Fish in to fire things up. Faithful to each other through little order and beauty. Little Fish took five years to become what it is today. Winner of Indy Award ‘Rock act of the Year 2008’ and of a Live Maida Vale Weekend session on BBC Radio 1. Little Fish have recently signed to Custard/Universal and have just finished recording their first album with producer Linda Perry in LA. Lose our memory and meet another world in 2009 that will be other than our own…

Check out the Facebook Events Page for more information and more music links.

Southsea Skate Comp – Feel The Love – 2nd May

All round good guy and Southsea skate legend Cody needs no introduction really. This Saturday will see what we’re sure will be the first of many competitions this year that Cody is organising. DJ’s, BBQ, High Ollie Comp, Games of SKATE and all sorts of regular skate related carnage.

£5 to enter and skate or £1.50 to spectate and shout at Punk Paul so he falls off his board.

All the proceeds go towards keeping the Skatepark open and hopefully reaching that beautiful dream of a brand new mini ramp. All the info is on the flyer. Get involved.

PRIMARY – A Phoneography Exhibition by Strong Island – Call for entries

This coming new year we will be proud to announce our latest exhibition PRIMARY, a Phoneography exhibition by Strong Island and we are even happier to announce that it’s open to you, the readers.

With the continuing increase in impressive camera technology in mobile phones and the ability to alter, tweak, post process and upload the photos to social media networks and websites like Instagram, the popularity of Phoneography has never been greater.

The ‘of the moment’ ability to take a photo at almost any time and any place by most people has really driven the fact that the camera does not make the photographer. By which I mean, you don’t need an expensive camera to take outstanding photos.

Agreed, the quality of the physical image may not stand up to the big guns, but new learnings in composition, style and aesthetic by a new generation of camera users via online media has really driven this popularity, and encourage people to go beyond a ‘quick shot’.

PRIMARY invites you to get out and about around Portsea with your mobile phone camera and take photos of anything and everything based around the three primary colours red, yellow and blue. What you photograph is entirely up to you, but submissions will only be accepted if they stick to the theme.

The call for entires has now begun and the deadline is the 31st of January 2012 with the exhibition being held in March of 2012. Photos can be taken on any mobile phone model and we ask that a maximum of 3 photos per applicant are sent in to primary@strong-island.co.uk.

Please submit along with your photographs your name, photo title, phone model, location of photo on the island and any post process apps you used, if any, to achieve the final shot.

We look forward to seeing all the entries, and the final installation will be something special using every photo submitted in a slightly different fashion from your average photographic exhibition. CLICK HERE TO PRINT YOUR OWN POSTER

It’s going to be a Strong Movember – Closed at £725

Righto chaps, it’s time to clean shave your boat race and get that mighty moustache on the grow in support of Movember for The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research. For 30 days of November you can help support and raise awareness through selflessly parading your top lip for charity.

You can sign up yourself, as I’m sure many of you already have, or you can join the Strong Island team and seek out sponsorship as a team. Through the Strong Island Movember page you can ask people to join the group, make donations, upload photos and post updates via the MoSpace page, Facebook and Twitter.

Head over to www.mobro.co/StrongIsland if you would like to get involved and grow a Strong Moustache to help raise awareness, or simply head over to www.uk.movember.com and sign up to personally raise money.

The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male specific cancers – prostate and testicular cancer. The funds raised are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research. Together, these channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programmes in line with our strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.
