Ghost Ship: A Pageant for Portsmouth

Anyone that went down to see the theatre and fireworks display at Castle Field on Sunday night witnessed something I don’t think anyone expected. After a dramatic story telling of the ships fate, a parade of flags, full costume dance routine on the steps and a Parkour rigging reenactment they burned the whole thing down. Quite something to watch. They walked a huge burning anchor past the ship and then a burning cannon let off blasts in the direction of the ship which reacted with a full scale fireworks display and then promptly burned to the ground.

So convinced was I that they would not burn the ship due to it’s size and insane health and safety risks that I bet Ben Mills £5 it wouldn’t happen. More the fool me, but it was actually well worth the fiver to watch a ship burn on Castle Field. Well done to Portsmouth Council for letting this free event happen. It was a great family event and everyone really enjoyed it.

The additional photograph below is by Andrew Yardley who I met last night and kindly asked if he could send some of his photos to us. Thanks Andy, great photo.

Thought of the Week with Handsome ‘Dave’ Rocker

Well fuck, if I didn’t make this one hell of a fucking tribute to Michael Jackson I shouldn’t be aloud a computer.

No matter what you might think of the man himself ,I’m pretty sure he’s been a part of all of our lives, from trying to moonwalk and doing all the dance moves to dressing up like thriller at the school disco.

BASICALLY if you don’t like jacko you don’t like music.

But this doe’s make us realise that life is short, so lets have some fucking fun, YEAH.

Southsea Unite, is definitely happening and its going to be on the 8th of august and its going to be great, I want to be impressed by the picnics, fancy dress and pretty much anything goes. We are going to have a massive game of rounders and an after party with me and the other guys from we supply movement at the little jonny Russell, I’m sure a few of you know it. Keep checking this site for more info and soon to be facebook group. If you can help by sticking up a poster or dishing out some flyers, please contact me. Thanks for tuning in again…..

NeBAir

You may well have picked up a copy of Southsea’s newest magazine Noir et Blanc recently (if not, it’s available in a few different places for free), well some of the guys behind that are also behind a new radio show:

“For the first time ever, you can listen to your radio in black-and-white! That’s right; it’s the voice of the NeBula. Imagine letting your ears sink into a lovely warm bath full of really interesting, amusing water. It’s just like that, but without the bath and without the water. Alright, so maybe that wasn’t the best description, but the point remains the same – NeB Air is definitely worth tuning in to. It’s an hour-long radio show packed with interviews, musings and banter. All that, and there’re tunes as well. We’ve got a pair of fantastic people called Tom and Joel to host the show. We’re sure you’ll all get on like a house on fire.

Mr Tom Walters is your host for the evening.
Mr Joel Ransom the prat that interupts him.
There is a voice from above that likes to interject.
Higgy plays guitar.
And it’s all recorded in some lucky bugger’s house.

We have games, BRILLIANT music, random (very random) chats about love, chocolate, holidays, festivals.
We have interviews, soundbites from famous friends and other things we’re just going to make up.”

The first show is on Monday June 29th from 7 til 8pm on 93.7 FM if you’re in Portsmouth, or listen online at www.expressfm.com if you’re not.

f you want to get involved and communicate while they’re on air hit them up over Facebook, but mainly via Twitter if you want to play the game, phone in, text or whatever: twitter is the only way of finding out the number to call.

New Bowl

A perfect new bowl has just been finished up the M27 just outside Fareham (a village called Knowle). Although rumours are the little park might be extended it currently contains a 3 foot bowl linked to a 4 foot bowl plus a hard to get at driveway. A couple of evening sessions with a few car loads of skaters from Portsmouth have gone down already and Bored will be putting up some footage soon.

We Supply Movement Feat. Mystery Jets

Mystery Jets are post-punk revival indie boys formerly based on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham, London.

Much attention has been drawn to their hosting of a series of parties, dubbed “The White Cross Revival”, on Eel Pie Island. The parties, featuring as many bands as possible on one stage each night, have played host to the likes of Acoustic Ladyland, Larrikin Love, Dr Filth, Jamie T, The Noisettes, Les Incompetents, Ladyfuzz, Jeremy Warmsley, The Archive and The Mergatroid. Over 600 people attended the final Eel Pie Party. I’d say its quite obvious these guys know how to have a party.

Check out all future developments from the We Supply Movement crew over at their new website wesupplymovement.com and of course on Strong Island.

Some friends from London (and Surrey) have made a few trips down to Portsmouth in recent months to skate some of our city’s amazing spots. The first clip is from this past weekend, the second is from April. Check Jamie’s fakie rock at the lawcourts…going fakie at that is something else. Also good to see the Tricorn banks getting skated too.

Both clips filmed by Mark Jackson and featuring Jamie Arghh, Ben Coughlan and Mark Jackson. To see more footage from Mark’s skate travels hit up www.markj.co.uk.

Portsmouth – Not The New Malta

Do you remember our post about Portsmouth, The New Malta and the advertising campaign that has been going on? The Telegraph has written a short article in response to the campaign. Check it out HERE and follow it up in the comments. Unfashionable, now come on Telegraph.

“We probably get about two weeks of sunshine at best, and you are more used to seeing people fighting than socialising in a quaint café,” said Tim Courtnell, a life-long Portsmouth resident. “The beach at Southsea is a mixture of shingle and Stella Artois cans on most days, and you wouldn’t think of swimming in the sea.”

Local Photographer – Rich Heath

I always search Southsea on Flickr at least once a week to see what sort of askew views people take on this fair town. Rich Heaths photographs stopped me dead in my tracks scrolling through pages when I saw his sunrise photographs. Simply awesome. Check out Rich’s Flickr Photostream for more photos and head over to his website Hampshire Light to buy prints.

The photograph below was chosen for the front page of The NEWS to accompany an article on the planned redevelopment of the sea front. I couldn’t find the article, but if anyone has a link post it up in the comments for all to see.
