Lost & Found 35mm of Southsea

Unlike Paul, I’m terrible at getting any 35mm film developed. Sometimes many months after finishing a roll. I just got a few hundred shots back from good old ASDA and, of course, there were plenty of Southsea photos. Check a few here and then head over to my Flickr to view the full Lost & Found set comprising of photos from all sorts of random events and places.

Memorials and Monuments in Portsmouth

The Memorials and Monuments in Portsmouth website is a collection of every plaque, memorial, monument, etc in Portsmouth. The website itself is quite a fascinating resource in to local history, events and famous residents and well worth looking through the interesting background stories and old photographs. Always good to discover the history of the places you walk by every day.

A Storm in a Tea Cup. An Open House Exhibition

Jane Shepherd recently got in contact about an up coming exhibition in Southsea. The weekend 14 & 15th November sees four Portsmouth-based artists, Katayoun Dowlatshahi, Patti Gaal-Holmes, Liz Bick and Jane Shepherd hold an open house exhibition ‘Storm in a Tea Cup.’ Exhibiting photographs, prints, drawings, artist’s books and screenings of experimental film this sounds really interesting and definitely worth a look see.

There will be work for sale, plus tea and loads of cakes on offer at 1 Balcarres Mansion, 5 Eastern Villas Road, Southsea, PO4 0SU. Check the map HERE and invite HERE.

Janes website is also worth checking out. A talented local artist with a strong illustrative style. www.janeshepherd.com

Halloween CHAOS

Voted the best club night by The NEWS, CHAOS is Portsmouth longest running night. We’ve all been, and we’ll all go again. Just the name CHAOS evokes memories of dancing like a loon and drinking Newcastle Brown Ale till 2am with all the skaters back in the 90′s. Carnage. Well nothing has changed really. A great vibe and good people. Dress like a George A Romero wet dream and get your groan on.

Wolfman Vs Dracula Halloween Special

Once a year a band arise from the dead to rock the night of all Hallows eve. This band of tortured souls are beyond mortal and have walked a dark and twisted path encountering werewolves, vampires, zombies and devils along the way. Their songs tell of their journey of damnation and lament for lost loves, murdered wives and salvation. The band are ‘Wolfman vs. Dracula’ and for one night only they are here to rock you all the way to the gates of hell!

Spawned from satanic waste and left to fester in Professor Deathgob’s petri dish, Black Moranis clawed its way from the sludge to become the greatest novelty Halloween rock band of all time. Witness devil music to corrupt your soul and melt your mind. Slugs and snails and puppy dogs’ tails: this is what Black Moranis are made of.

BUPA Great South Run this Sunday 25th October

I’ve never actually been down to watch the runners, let alone take part, but I understand it’s quite a sight to see 10,000 people running along the seafront. The Bupa Great South Run is notably labeled as Europes leading 10 mile road race and was recently awarded the coveted IAAF gold label status, becoming the first 10 miler in the world to be given the accolade for its exceptional standards of organisation and world class elite fields. Pretty impressive

If like me the thought of running makes your legs cry then you can watch it live on Channel 5 on Sunday 25th October at 10.25am.

Good luck to everyone who is taking part. Think like Linford and make sure to stretch before and after. Like I know what I’m talking about…

I just went through my pile of old bits and pieces and found dozens of tickets and flyers from 1996-2000, this night has been rolling deep for a long, long time.

Whole Lotta Led

Although some way off, got to mention that the mighty Whole Lotta Led will be playing at The Wedgewood Rooms on Friday 15th January, tickets are £9 and available online or at the box office. Whole Lotta Led are (surprisingly) a Led Zeppelin tribute band and incredible as they focus on the music, not dressing up. Famous for their shows where they perform specific albums with the songs in order (ala All Tomorrows Parties shows), they have a huge repertoire and often mix the classics with acoustic interludes. I’ve seen them five times before and every time is incredible, almost as good as the real thing. Almost.

Rock The Gilders!

Tagged as Metal/Rock/Tropical, Belligerence are a local band that sent over a few words after talking with friends that went on the Strong Island bike ride who recommended us. Nice.

“We managed after a couple of months of risk assesment and insurance documents to convince the Council to allow us to shoot on the Civic Office roof (they were actually pretty cool about it all, if a little scared of the fact we play metal and shout). Once we had the location we met up with friend and local director Johny Thrash to discuss shooting, he somehow convinced 3 of his london based friends (who at the time were working on Wes Anderson’s “The Fantastic Mr Fox”) to come down and help us out.

In the end we managed a 3 camera shoot and we are pretty happy with the result. The whole thing was done on a beg, borrow and steal budget (£350 believe it or not , and most of that was the insurance). We would love it if we could get some publicity through your site as to be honest Rock and Metal gets a pretty hard time when it comes to promotion in Pompey, when compared to the more commercial Pompey indie scene.”
