Jodie Silsby – New ‘Portsmouth Pubs’ Screen Prints
Top class local design graduate and member of ILD Jodie Silsby has begun a new project. Ever the workhorse Jodie has undertaken the task to create a book & website detailing the history and architecture of each individual pub, accompanied by a vector illustration of each. In the meantime Jodie has produced an initial poster of 14 of the pubs found on Albert Road in Southsea. The poster has been screen printed in 2-colour acrylics (purple & green) onto Light grey Reeves Blk paper (180gsm). It is sized 40cm x 50com, and is available to purchase at £39 (+ £4.95 p&p). Limited edition of 25, each poster is signed & numbered.
Joide also has her award-winning Portsmouth Vernacular Map available at the Special Christmas Offer Price of £19 (offer ends 31st December). Buy them HERE. Awesome work as ever Jodie.
More detailed images are on Jodies Flickr.
Christmas Arts & Crafts Mini Market
This Sunday 6th December head on down to the ‘Thoughtful Presents’ Christmas Arts & Crafts Mini Market at the Victoria Park Cafe. There’ll be a host of stalls selling all sorts of lovely things and one offs from recycled vintage bags to handmade jewelry and Childrens’ toys to retro prints. All at reasonable prices. Come and have a browse and a some tasty cake and a coffee while you’re there.
Strong Island X Bored Xmas Moustache & Metal Bash
The time is nearly upon us Ladies and Gentlemen. The boys are getting psyched to play their personal blend of, well, whatever really. I’ve not asked them what they will be playing so expect anything, literally anything from Gonz, Toby Taylor, Daniel Emo, Jay Pateman and Julian Brett.
Gentle Bren will then take control and and turn up the volume to 11. Get your air guitars ready. Very Metal…
BIG, BIG thanks for all your Metal suggestions. I’ve passed every tune and some extras on to Brendon so he can make his Metal playlist. The response was epic and hopefully you’ll hear at least one of your choices.
Unlike the poster suggests I’m afraid Brandy & Christmas Cake will not be available on the bar as we couldn’t afford it. Instead we’ll be putting out Mulled Wine and Hot Spiced Cider alongside Mince Pies and Moustaches on a first come first served basis.
No frills, no posters, no decorations, no manners, just one hell of a heavy Wednesday in Southsea with friends. This is not to be missed. Kick start December with a banger.

Suki Nabarro
Local artist Suki Nabarro does rather wonderful contemporary and impressionist paintings, with subjects ranging from the abstract to portraiture to landscape, including Portsmouth and Southsea. Currently a selection of Suki’s works are on exhibit at 1000 Lakeside Northharbour (the old IBM HQ) and many more can be seen on Suki’s website www.sukinabarro.com, be sure to look through the galleries.

Smoked Fish
Not sure when this happened exactly but the fish stall down in the harbour burnt down recently. I got a few photos down there whilst out on my bike, there are more over at Forever Circling.

Does what it says on the tin…
Jay Pateman doing what he does best. Being gnarly.

Cancer Research Fund Raver…
What are you doing Saturday 5th December? If you’ve got a blank space in you diary then perhaps we could entice you along to a wicked little one off tear up that is being hosted at the Fat Fox in our beloved Southsea village to raise some festive funds for the uber worthy and equally uber brilliant Cancer Research UK. Pencil it it in now.
For the frankly pittance door tax of just £3 you get to feast your ears on some of Southsea’s finest acts and collectives for your party pleasure and knees up delectation…
Hearts Of Oak (performing LIVE), Kry Wolf, Handsome Dave Rocker, Mr Bevis (Southsea’s Beat Box supremo), Gentle Bren, Tombola, Agi al, Sager and as if that weren’t enough to pull you away from X Factor… COR’s Very Own Mark Persaud & Rosko Siffredi will be playing.
We need your Top Ten METAL selections
With The Strong Island X Bored Christmas Moustache & Metal Bash approaching fast we need your help to gather some classic METAL. Gentle Bren is in the middle of his University Graphic Design Dissertation, and to help take the edge off and also so you can have your own input, we are asking for your Top Ten METAL tunes.
Either drop them to me, Paul, Bren, whoever, or email them to tristan@strong-island.co.uk and Bren will make a playlist for the night. The night being next Wednesday December the 2nd. Get involved and make sure you book Thursday off work.
EDIT: Or add your suggestions as comments!
EDIT: And I’ll legally download them!

Matt O’Neill
Matt is one of Southsea and Portsmouth’s legendary skateboarders since all the way back to the 80s. This footage was filmed all in one evening about a year ago, still one of the best skaters to ever step on a board on this fair isle.

Eugene Noble
Eugene recently sent me his flickr link. Love this shot of his friend in 2004 dropping in on the University House Banks on Winston Churchill Avenue. It has a real late 80s, early 90s feel about it. Long sleeve under a tee, fingerless skate gloves, rolling in the Autumn, and despite being shot in digital it has a real 35mm film feel to it. I have a feeling they are digital photos of prints. Still, looks pretty cool.
Local Designer – Carl Partridge
Portsmouth’s Carl Partridge is a local artist and photographer currently studying MA Communication Design up in that there London at Central St Martins. As well as all the awesome artwork on his website we particularly liked his Lomo Diana photos from round Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. Be sure to look through the good work over at www.carlpartridge.co.uk.
The Flaming Lips at The Guildhall
By the sounds of it The Flaming Lips lifted the Guildhall clean off its foundations the other day. Local music website mINtSouth has a review of the show and some photos too. mINtSouth is full of reviews and photos from loads of bands and shows from all over the south coast, have a good flick through.
The photo below is by Rob Ball, check Rob’s collection of photos from the Flaming Lips show (plus loads of other bands) over on his Flickr.

Hearts of Oak – Pet Sounds – Circle Square Triangle
No mirrors and smoke with Hearts of Oak. Get yourself down to EQ for LIVE music by the awesome Hearts of Oak and support from Hall of Mirrors and The Scandal and a special experimental Hip Hop set from The Weir all surround by the usual Pet Sounds mob. Lovely stuff. TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW
Once the bands have finished, downstairs will open, offering you the filthiest dance music/electro/indie your ears will be able to manage. Involved? Of course you are…
Creative Design Space for Rent
Daniel from Creative Design Space has office space available to share with 2 creatives. Situated opposite the Student Union Dan’s space can provide a desk, chair and lamp, coffee machine, with coffee, internet access and a seating area. Everything you could need to get out of the house and have somewhere to call work. All for £65 a week. Looks like a pretty sweet setup too.
Interested? Email Daniel at daniel@creativedesignspace.co.uk or drop him a line on 07765 684552.
Inside the Memorial
Due to possible damage due to the storm and the high winds it was possible to access the inside of the war memorial down on Southsea seafront the other day. I always though it was a solid structure but it turns out it is hollow with sunken foundations and access to the top. From the plaque inside, it looks like the ladder is for maintenance if there is a lightning strike (the top of the memorial has a huge copper globe).
No disrespect was meant by taking a very brief look inside, just architectural curiosity and finding out something not commonly known about a Southsea landmark.

Local Photographer – Paul Gordon
Local photographer Paul Gordon has spent a lot of time hanging out and photographing the local skaters over the summer, both in the skatepark and out and about. The photos from the summer are now up in galleries on Paul’s website www.questx.eu. As well as the skating photos there are also loads of other galleries too including sport, portraiture, landscape, etc. Have a flick through.
