George Crick – Panoramics

George Crick got in touch with information and images about his current panoramic project in and around Portsmouth. One of George’s panoramics came 3rd place in the Noir Et Blanc Magazine competition we mentioned last year and since George has been adding to his collection. Below are a few examples, be sure to check George’s website for much bigger versions and more plus lots more photography and illustration too.

Future Cycling Cities hosted by Portsmouth Cycle Forum (Pompey Bug)

The ever busy cycle committee over at The Portsmouth Cycle Forum, also know as Pompey Bug are hosting the CTC/Cyclenation Cycle Campaign Conference, on 17th April 2010 in association with the Cycle Touring Club and Cyclenation.

The conference will take place at the University’s Portland Building discussing & sharing skills, knowledge based around the theme of “Future Cycling Cities”, focussing on how to put cycling at the heart of town and city life.

Pompey Bug has really helped push and develop a lot of key cycle points around the city and deserve our support in helping make Portsmouth a better place to ride.

Southsea’s New Ramp

The new mini ramp at Southsea skatepark has pretty much unanimously been loved by everyone who has skated it in the last week or so. The ramp is perfect for young guns and old farts alike with lots of old faces coming out of the woodwork to give it the once over. No doubt this has been a huge success to everyone involved in raising funds over the last 2 years or so.

Expect a video edit at some point and loads more photos but for now here are a few snaps from Sunday’s sessions. Hope to see you there over the summer.

Bank Holiday Bike Ride After Party – Call for films

Graham had kindly organised an After Party for The Strong Island Bike Ride this April 4th at The One Eyed Dog. There is an opportunity to have films projected for the evening in the Duck side of The Dog and I thought this would be a good platform to see is anyone would like to contribute or has some cool bike films we can play. Any bike film/short/videos would be cool. If you think you can help then either speak directly to Graham or drop an email/comment to Strong Island. Thanks for your support.

Greyhound Stadium to Close

Sad news this weekend of Portsmouth’s greyhound stadium being set to close for redevelopment. The huge monolith of wood is quite the landmark as you drive on to the island via the M275 and despite being a little run down the place is full of old character and by the sounds of it raises a lot of money for charity directly and in-directly.

Hopefully the Southsea Gent’s excursion will not be effected.

Dom Powling for Bored – Extended Cut

Dom Powling’s previous edit for Bored has had an extended cut treatment, full of Chichester and Portsmouth street spots, filmed in HD and beautifully edited by Sam Bailey.

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
