LJR’s Has A Posse

What’s all this then huh? Keep ‘em peeled for updates and something special really soon.

Langstone Harbour Flickr Group

Langstone Harbour is one of my favourite places, in contrast to Portsmouth’s busy main harbour Langstone Harbour is quiet, heavily effected by it’s strong tides and also a haven for wildlife. I looked to see if there was a Flickr group dedicated to the harbour and there wasn’t one, so I decided to create one.

If you have any photos from Langstone Harbour please join the group and add them so we can collectively create a pool of photos that show how special Langstone Harbour is.

Streetlight Photography Course

If you’re aged 16-24 and you’ve been unemployed for 6 months or more, then this could well be a great opportunity for you. Streetlight is a short course that uses exciting teaching methods to explore creativity and photography. The team of tame experts will show you how to turn a couple of disposable cameras into a professional exhibition through talks, tutorials and seminars. You’ll be guided through every stage of producing, promoting and presenting your work, with no previous photography experience necessary. Along the way you’ll learn important new skills and develop valuable networks.

The enjoyable, casual approach and tailor-made programme is designed to suit everyone – all you’ve got to do is want to take part and try something new. By the end of the course you’ll have made new friends, been introduced to useful organisations and have two professional exhibitions to add to your CV. As if that’s not enough, there’s one more thing, there’s no charge for this course, it’s free!

The Boy Friend

A quick reminder of undoubtedly one of the biggest film events in Portsmouth this year: on the 16th May a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Ken Russell, Twiggy, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Brian Murphy and Murray Melvin at a special 35mm screening of The Boy Friend (courtesy of the BFI) at The New Theatre Royal, filmed there in 1971, before the fire.

There will be a unique matinee performance with live chat, tap dancing and a celebration of Ken Russell and his incredible career. The interview will be led by Sally Taylor from 2.15pm, film screening will be at 3pm.

Tickets are £35 (£25 for concessions) and available in the box office or online.

PCM Hit Wimbledon Park

Portsmouth Creative Movement did some work up at Wimbledon Park the other day, Claire Sambrook was there to take some photos of the new work in progress. More can be seen here (plus links to the artists themselves).

Disposable Perspectives A Grassroots Art Project

Disposable Perspectives is a grassroots art project, run by people who like to get their teeth dirty and hands messy. Using disposable cameras the project aspires to be a culmination and celebration of art + culture in Portsmouth. The project works on the ethic that 25% of any money made will go towards a community cause, whilst the other 75% will be used to keep it afloat. However as we move in to the summer, and the creative juices are flowing, they are hunting for that cause. They have a few possibilities in the pipeline but want the suggestions of the people who live in the heart of Southsea. So if you have an idea of where an injection of money would be well spent, then send it to hello@disposableperspectives.org

You can view the first batch of photos to be developed at www.disposableperspectives.org (and marvel at the wonderful banner created by local designer George Crick.

Keep your eyes open for further developments in the next few months.

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
