This Saturday see’s the first night of the new Pet Sounds residency begin at The Kraken Wakes, and what better way to kick start with Jacques birthday celebration. Come and fill your ears with tunes you might not be expecting, but really do owe it to yourself to enjoy. Most of you know what to expect from a Pet Sounds night. “With the right amount of chemistry between you lot and our record collections, we predict a great deal of dancing, lots of pointing at the ceiling, the inevitable spilt drink and most importantly, a reluctance to pack up and go home. Let’s Spend The Night Together.”
Pet Sounds will be along side Filthy Dukes in another room. Filthy Dukes are a genre melting electro band with influences ranging as far as Tangerine Dream to Hot Chip, Can to SMD, Roxy Music to Soulwax, Hip Hop to Kraut Rock. You know a bit of old with a bit of modern, plus loads of other things it would take ages to list!

On Tuesday June 1st Round 3 of the 2010 Halfords Tour Series takes place in Portsmouth and between 2pm and 3pm the public can sign up for a turn around the track. There are 4 sessions 2.00/2.15/2.30/2.45 for about 20 –30 riders each session. First come. first served…man, what a day to be at work and I’ve booked Friday off so I’ll never be able to blag it. Gutted…
This will be followed by some races organised by British Cycling and then the big race at 7pm, ending at 8.15 with the podium presentations at 8.30pm.
The 2010 Halfords Tour Series takes place across ten cities, and sees ten teams of five professional cyclists battle it out to be crowned the best team in the country. In each round of intense, fast paced and gladiatorial circuit racing, the teams compete to place their top three riders in the highest positions. The 2010 Halfords Tour Series boasts the strongest line up yet of the UK’s elite riders, competing to wear the Halfords leader jersey and to be crowned the champion team in Britain!
Riders will include Olympians Chris Newton, Rob Hayles and Ed Clancy, as well as Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Malcolm Elliot and 2008 National Criterium Champion Dean Downing.
Mick Bennett, technical director for the Halfords Tour Series, said: ‘We are extremely pleased to have Portsmouth join us as a host venue. Bringing residents and business together in an afternoon packed full of activities based around cycling, Portsmouth will help celebrate the best of British cycle racing as well as promote a healthier way of living.’
Drusilla Moody, Portsmouth City Council’s tourism and visitor services manager, said: ‘We’ve worked hard to bring this event to Portsmouth. Cycling has become more and more popular, with the success of British riders in the Olympics and a new British team in the Tour De France. And of course, more and more people are making cycling part of their lifestyle. This will give our efforts to promote cycling another boost and showcase Portsmouth to a big TV audience.’

Durty Sound System & Civilisation Of The Rough, come together for one hell of a block party to raise money and awareness for ‘No More Durty Water’. FIVE rooms with The Six Million Dollar Man Club, Durty Fun Casino, and by public demand the return of Jim Barber’s Play Your Cards Right.
‘No More Durty Water‘ is a campaign to help provide safe and abundant water for the people of the world. Clean water is a basic human right and it is essential for the health of our species. Providing clean water is a simple task that the governments of this world have failed to achieve. Perhaps they don’t care? Unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation is detrimental in the fight against poverty, hunger & disease. The ‘No More Durty Water’ group have not taken up this challenge lightly and we will be working hard to clean up the world’s water for many years to come. Unable to rely those in power to provide clean water, it is up to us to come together, raise awareness and help those who need clean water to survive.
Project Uganda – We shall be working for the villages of Uganda in association with ‘Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministry’ http://bohcm.org. (Reg charity No-1126408) Our first target is for a ‘protected spring’ costing £1,200 which will provide fresh clean water for one village.

Lets just hope the floor don’t give way this time! As if that’s not enough to get you up on the Block Party DF, also at the Vaults will be the wonderful The Six Million Dollar Man Club and the party organisers themselves Durty Sound System! On top of that there will be Southsea’s very own Jim ‘Brucey’ Barber hosting the now infamous ‘Play Your Cards Right’ in Vines (a proper good show, worth the ticket price alone!) as well as other gambling fun such as a fun casino and scalelectric (you will all be given funny money on your way in to the Block Party gamble with!) This is gonna be great bank holiday blow out …
Tickets are just £5 and ALL profit is going to the Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministry to provide clean water in Uganda. Tickets Available from The Wine Vaults and Head Hairdressing, 53 Albert Road (Just ask for Uncle Tim, he’ll sort you out). Portsmouth’s Pounds scrapyard has been the final stop for the lives of many military vehicles over the years but most noticeable it has been the location for a submarine graveyard. So iconic was the sight of the submarines as you entered Portsmouth that they became the inspiration for the architect when designing the new swimming pool at the Mountbatten Centre.
Robin Hinson has a large collection of photos of the scrapped submarines here, with a few shown below.

This Saturday gone saw the completion of Borneos vintage Major Nicols bike. It was originally supposed to be his Raleigh project that was built up first, but time issues meant he had to pull it out of the hat and make sure he had a full restoration to present to Claire for the latest Love Your Bike window display at Bellamys Antiques. Be sure to check for updates on this Sundays Love Your Bike event HERE.
We followed the morning up very well by heading to Chris’s and getting involved in another build for Andy. 8 or so hours later and a few beers and some excellent barbecue food the Ellis Briggs bike was finished (pretty much). Chris brought his strong bag of technical tricks to the table in order to put this bike together. Chris really knows his stuff. Keep your eye on his blog HERE where he’ll talk you through the Major Nicols, the Raleigh and Andys truly amazing Ellis Briggs. Full photoset of the day is over on Flickr
