NAVY Days 2010

The Royal Navy’s two newest warships are set to be dazzling double act as the newest naval technology features alongside the historic prowess of the naval fleet of the past, including HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860, at this summer’s Navy Days event at Portsmouth Naval Base and Historic Dockyard.

The new formidable Type 45 destroyers HMS Daring and HMS Dauntless are among the most powerful warships in the world and for the first time together they will open their hatches to the public for the three-day event, which runs Friday 30th July – Sunday 1st August.

This spectacular event ensures that there is always something going on around every corner from awe-amazing military displays of the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter team and the Royal Marines Display Team, to displays of strength, courage and teamwork from the Field Gun Crews of HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood, army parachute teams, motorcycle displays and of course the military band.

Over 800 years of naval history will be brought to life at every turn with historical re-enactment displays, a cast of hundreds of costumed characters and the welcoming doors of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Mary Rose Museum and HMS Warrior 1860 will open wide to guarantee a fantastic, fun-filled day out for all the family!

Tickets available from the Visitor Information Service – on Southsea Seafront and right outside the entrance to the Historic Dockyard. Adults £19.50, Child / Senior £16, Family £55.

Further information is available from the Navy Days website – www.navydaysuk.co.uk as well as online ticketing HERE.

Luna Park – Ultrasauros arrives in Southsea

Now I must admit I forgot about this. Somehow. Coming soon to an area of common ground near you is the truly epic Ultrasauros. A spectacular 16 metre tall recreation of an accidental dinosaur, will graze Southsea Common. A set of giant dinosaur bones was discovered in the 1970s in the United States by Professor Jim Jensen, and was believed to be the largest dinosaur ever. However, it was later revealed that the collection of fossils came from two different dinosaur species and Ultrasauros was, in fact, a fiction. Ultrasauros is without a doubt the largest structure to of ever stood freely on the common. To my knowledge that is…

Creators Heather & Ivan Morison will also be hosting a sculptural & photographic exhibition at The Aspex Gallery. ‘An Unreachable Country. A Long Way to Go’ will explore how things may transcend their given forms to create the vehicles for humankind to journey beyond the fragile and temporal world.

There is more information on events and activities surrounding the Ultrasuros’s stay in Southsea over at www.visitportsmouth.co.uk

King Kong 2010

The 24th of July, the beautifully sun-soaked Saturday just gone, saw the urban culture & skate event; King Apparel King Kong 2010 take over Southsea Skatepark.

Aimed at celebrating & encouraging the creative sides of urban culture, it certainly did that. The ‘Street Art Doodle Wall’ was well and truly covered in a bit of everyone’s creative (and messy) spark, shout out to all the artists down on the day who had some great freestyle pieces going down, stuART, Mr. Kemp, Leila, Bryan & Joe. Also our arty sponsors Graphotism & Ironlak (well worth checking out if your into that kind of thing).

Plenty of fat beats boomed out across the park and common around it thanks to DJ Mos, Kenny, Random Scarves & the Durty Sound System DJs, a beastly selection of dirty dubstep, DnB, hip hop & alternative funk kept everyone’s tastes more than satisfied, sound track to the day couldn’t have been better.

Anyone unlucky enough to not make it down missed out on some hot as hell discounts on some of the freshest threads about, as the King Apparel team were down in force with a stall showcasing their selection of fine garments and not to forget the crafty locals Individual Threads.

Last but not least the key part of this year’s event; The Herbal Skateboards Mini-Ramp Jam was SICK.
Contest format was a minute each, going into a final 5 skaters with 2 minute runs. It was a heated battle and off the chain tricks were going down left, right & centre, but in the end the victors looked a little something like this:
In 1st Adam Keys, 2nd Noddy Rands & 3rd Bob Grist. All well deserving winners, with plenty of King Apparel, Herbal SBs, LovenSkate & Vans products as prizes. Again well done guys!

This was followed by a best trick contest and Casey Brown took top honours with the smith to kickflip out that he had nailed pre-contest…so sick. Some King Apparel T-shirts and a Herbal skateboard found their way into Casey’s mitts.

Thanks goes out to the Herbal crew who ran the jam, Strong Island’s Paul Gonella who kindly came down to help judge the contest, SUSO Drinks who kept everyone from going thirsty on a very hot day and everyone at Southsea Skatepark for helping making the event happen.

Deep South – Clarence Pier #2

James Weaver has put his latest illustration up online over at www.deepsouth-illustration.com. It’s the far side view of Clarence Pier to pair up with the last illustration of the Pier & Gift Shop and is available for £19 (A4) and £39 (A3). Head over to The Deep South Shop and grab one now. I can’t get enough of these illustrations. Definitely some of my favourite works this year.

“Clarence Pier was built in 1861, channeling steamboats over to the Isle of Wight. It was heavily bombed in World War II, and reopened in its present form with amusement arcades and funfair in 1961. A decline in interest to traditional British seaside attractions led to the Pier coming close to bankruptcy in recent times, and its days are surely numbered, although Pirate Pete’s, the legendary childrens indoor playground (social leprosy would be dead cert if any self-respecting primary schooler declined to hold their birthday party there in the late 80’s – early 90’s) is still in use, as is the Skyways rollercoaster, and one of the few remaining Wimpy bars can be found there.”

PRIMARY – A Phoneography Exhibition by Strong Island – Call for entries

This coming new year we will be proud to announce our latest exhibition PRIMARY, a Phoneography exhibition by Strong Island and we are even happier to announce that it’s open to you, the readers.

With the continuing increase in impressive camera technology in mobile phones and the ability to alter, tweak, post process and upload the photos to social media networks and websites like Instagram, the popularity of Phoneography has never been greater.

The ‘of the moment’ ability to take a photo at almost any time and any place by most people has really driven the fact that the camera does not make the photographer. By which I mean, you don’t need an expensive camera to take outstanding photos.

Agreed, the quality of the physical image may not stand up to the big guns, but new learnings in composition, style and aesthetic by a new generation of camera users via online media has really driven this popularity, and encourage people to go beyond a ‘quick shot’.

PRIMARY invites you to get out and about around Portsea with your mobile phone camera and take photos of anything and everything based around the three primary colours red, yellow and blue. What you photograph is entirely up to you, but submissions will only be accepted if they stick to the theme.

The call for entires has now begun and the deadline is the 31st of January 2012 with the exhibition being held in March of 2012. Photos can be taken on any mobile phone model and we ask that a maximum of 3 photos per applicant are sent in to primary@strong-island.co.uk.

Please submit along with your photographs your name, photo title, phone model, location of photo on the island and any post process apps you used, if any, to achieve the final shot.

We look forward to seeing all the entries, and the final installation will be something special using every photo submitted in a slightly different fashion from your average photographic exhibition. CLICK HERE TO PRINT YOUR OWN POSTER
