LIVE Paint Jam, Indoor Market & Record Fayre

A little reminder for this Bank Holiday as it’s certainly going to be yet another banger. It’s pretty much a given in Southsea that Bank Holidays are always jam packed with goodness. On the 28th Little Johnny Russells will host their usual Indoor Market and Record Fayre with a tasty little twist. They will be bombarded by the Monk Jam out back in the garden. What’s a Monk Jam I hear you say!

“Monk Jam is all about bringing street art back to the streets. Not too sure where its been but now its back with twelve dedicated (local and not so local) artists showcasing their talents free of charge in front of your very eyes. Majority of artist are locally based and most of their work can be seen around the city at locations such as Fratton Park Alleys, Wimbledon Park Sports Centre and Hope Street in the centre of town. We’ve even got a special guest appearance from locally based graphic design company PSEUDONYM, top boys. Also confirmed is Dom Williams, part of a team representing Cardiff in the European competition Secret Wars, check it out HERE.

We will also be running a raffle with the top two prizes being one off pieces by FarkFk and LEX and third prize a Monk Jam t-shirt. The first hundred raffle tickets will also get a free monk sticker, after that a kiss and a cuddle. Little Johnny Russell’s will also being running an indoor market on the day with a stall being dedicated to all the artists own work, so if you like what you see you can help fund your favourite street artist in future projects.”

Look forward to meet yo all. Monk.

I’m going to keep some of the details under my hat for the time being as there are a few more things to sort out, but keep it in mind and we will have more information for you at the start of August.

We’ve also moved over from our old Facebook Group and started a new Facebook Page. Keep up with everything happening and more information on our Birthday Party over HERE. Look forward to seeing you all and hopefully putting some faces to names.

OPEN STUDIO – SOUTHSEA Exhibition

Local Photographer Diana Goss recently got in contact with us regarding a local exhibition this SUnday 28th & Monday 30th of August.

“As you well know Southsea boasts a vast array of artistic and creative talent. Maggie Ambler has decided to open her house Bank Holiday weekend to showcase creative work by talented local artists as she feels there are not enough venues for doing this locally. I have been invited to exhibit at Maggies Open Studio which is really nice and very close to me.

Maggie decided to use her home to showcase the artwork as this is where she likes to be creative and explore how colour can be used. Maggie will be exhibiting her textile work and the murals she is currently creating.

This event offers the public the opportunity to view a range of high quality work including textiles, glassware, jewellery, photography and wall paintings. The exhibition features work by Maggie and textile artist Chantelle Cheshire, glass designer Julie Dickson, jewellery designer Katherine Webber and photography by Diana Goss.

The exhibition runs from Sunday 29th and Monday 30th August from 10 am to 5 pm at 76 Collingwood Road, Southsea PO5 2QZ. Admission is free and some of the work will be for sale. Contact Maggie Ambler: Telephone 07789 286192″

Scratch Practice with Theory 77

The consistently prolific Theory 77 has been a well known face and character in Southsea for many, many years and although he’s now living down the road in Brighton, he still holds strong connections to the island. Rather than wax lyrical about Mike I’ll let his work do the talking so to say. Those that know him are aware, and those that don’t should take five and check him out.

Head over to www.nofrillsrecords.co.uk for all you need to know including FREE MP3s. Hook up on Facebook, check out the Theory 77 Podcasts and watch more videos over at YouTube. More than enough to keep you from doing any work for a while.

“Theory 77 is a Turntablist/battle DJ, Producer and MC/poet based in Brighton, East Sussex. Described by John Peel as “Astonishing”, Theory 77’s musical style is inspired by lo-fi Folk, Delta Blues, ‘60’s Pysch and the original elements of old school hiphop. Theory 77 formally known as “Theory” In 2009, after working under the name “Theory” since 1994, Theory 77 decided to change his name due to the amount of other artists working under the same alias.”

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
