Unit 19 Christmas Session

Just seen this edit of the Unit 19 Christmas session, lots of incredible skating going down on the ramp just around the corner from Portsmouth. That frontside ollie in particular is something very special.

Anita Bell

Anita Bell is a highly skilled local craft-person and artist with a wide variety of work ranging from intricate impressionist inspired pictures to beautiful handmade paper. One small part of her wide body of work is entitled Horizons and Skies which is a subject I personally find fascinating. The unique and individual pieces are composed of various combinations of dyed and stitched papers, handmade paper, natural fibres and couched threads and come from looking towards the horizon, an imaginary line where earth or sea meets the sky and reflects a distant landscape and changing light particularly at dawn and dusk.

Be sure to take some time to look through Anita’s work, much of which is available to buy are very reasonably prices.

Gosport Ferry Webcam

Brodnax Moore (@mrbroddy) gave us the heads up via Twitter on how good the live Gosport Ferry webcam is. The webcam is located on the Gosport dock side with a view of the harbour traffic and the Spinnaker Tower, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory. Sitting on the dock remotely from your warm house is now possible!

Ben Coughlan

Ben Coughlan recently had an amazing interview in the UK skate magazine Sidewalk featuring loads of photos at Portsmouth spots. The photos were taken with medium format film by awesome photographer Lex Kembery, you can see more of Lex’s work at www.lexk.co.uk (Lex’s portraits are particularly good).

Interactive Harbour Chart

Confession, I love nautical charts. I’m really not sure why but if I walk in to a pub and spy one on the wall I have to have a good look. I think it’s partly because they add unusual layers of detail that don’t exist on normal maps (tidal changes, measured depths, wreaks, etc) and also because every sandbank, channel, island, nook and cranny has a name and more often than not an interesting name giving hints to the history of that particular location. In their own way they take on an artistic form merging cartography and patterns of statistical data related to changes in nature.

Langstone Harbour and Chichester Harbour are both tidal and very large and as such nautical charts of the area are heavy with intriguing detail about a location many of us know so well. The Chichester Harbour Conservancy website has an amazing interactive chart of the harbours that allow you to navigate around and the zoom in to find out more. I spent quite some time exploring the small channels below Thorney Island, the small islands in Langstone Harbour, the different creeks at Bosham and The Winner sandbank at East Head.

As well as being something interesting for the curious, practical for the sailors and also artistically beautiful in it’s own way the chart has given me some good ideas for walks and a bit of exploring. Time to figure out tide times to see if I can explore those Langstone Harbour islands with my camera…

Below are a couple of screen grabs of the chart. Get exploring.

Snow Photos

A quick heads up, I’ve been posting photos on Forever Circling that were taken during a walk around Milton and Langstone Harbour after the recent snowfall. Below are a small selection, if you are interested there are loads more over at www.forevercircling.com

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
