Another Stolen Bike

I’m the bearer of sad news once again I’m afraid. Cliff had his bike stolen in the cold morning hours and has sent us a message in hope that our readers will keep their eyes out for the bike described and shown below. Fingers crossed mate.

“Bike was stolen early morningon Monday 31st January from my shed in my garden near the Belle Isle in Southsea. They must have climbed over the wall and bedroom roof to the enclosed garden. I must have disturbed them as they only got away with one of my bikes but it would be the one I had lovingly restored from a trashed 1974 frame and added high spec components to! The bike WAS a beautiful vintage fixie in gadget blue with crome forks. The stem and bullhorn handlebars were white with a front brake. The bike had alluminiun wheels with blue and black tyres, a tan brown saddle and a silver chain ring and peddles with white toe straps (the housing of the left had just broken off. Any sightings please contact Cliff at clintquiff@hotmail.com and look after your bikes. Thank you.”

Utility of Space : Paint Jam

Strong Island reported on this event recently and was looking forward to seeing the results. Top street artists from around the UK vs the hoardings outside Zurich Buildings. Pseudonym have emailed us with a few quotes and you can follow the link below for further images.

“Wow… what a weekend. Firstly we’ve got to say a massive thank you to all the artists that braved the bitter cold to come down and show off their skills… All you guys killed it – completely – Portsmouth has never seen such awesome artwork on its streets. Huge thanks also to all the graffiti art lovers for coming down and snapping away, and passing on their positive feedback – it was really encouraging.
If you haven’t managed to get down to the city centre and see the work yet… here’s a little sneak peek – but you really need to see this work in the flesh – so its well worth a trip.
It is positive for us to know that Portsmouth City Council, local residents, and the local press have whole-heartedly supported an event such as this. It’s greater encouragement for us to organise more creative projects in the future.
Cheers,”

Pod Noodle Made Me Puke

Usually I would write some rant about the night before, the atmosphere, the laughs, the banter, the dancing till your white shoes turned black, but I’m too tired and a tad hungover for that. I’ll just say this. What a night. Cheers to Ben for letting Pod Noodle unleash his barrage of guilty pleasure heavy hitters on to the frenzied dance floor. He’s not left the country yet but what an exit. Peep the photos & video for a taste of Pod Noodle. More over at Flickr too.

GSPT ‘Cruising’

Danny Pickthall got in contact and pointed us in the direction of Gosport group GSPT, who recently released a new song ‘Cruising’. The song features vocals from Bear Cavalry’s Louis and a sublime sample from The Cure’s ‘Lullaby’. Nice video too. GSPT have played a few gigs around the area, including supporting Example at the pyramids on NYE. Find out more at the boys’ MySpace.

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
