Enjoying Local Food – Akrams

Hands down one of my favourite food stores in Portsmouth. Having been there for as long as I can remember, Akram’s has always been THE place to go if you need your far eastern ingredients. Ranging from Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Jamaican and many other destinations, Akrams is your ticket down the spice trail. I can quite happily spend my time walking up and down the aisles buying items that I don’t recognise but I know will probably blow my head off. Alongside your obligatory pastes, sauces and spices, they also boast an in-house butchers, a veg section and frozen fish. Get yourselves down to Palmerston Road, check it out and immerse yourself in an exotic part of Southsea.

Pet Sounds Weekly Playlist #44 – Year’s Roundup 2011

A fantastic 12 months for music is almost up, I really had no idea there’d been so much good stuff until I tried in vain to repeat last year’s top 30. I couldn’t even manage it in 40 and I am ready and expecting complaints about omissions still.

My favourite albums of the year – D by White Denim, Cloud Control, Nicholas Jaar, Elbow are still killing it for me, Hearts, and the Battles album is top. There’s loads more though, some really good stuff.

Labelling your home brew.

So the annual Strong Island Home Brew competition is drawing closer and I thought that me and the family would have some crafty fun. Whatever way your choosing to label up your liquid gold you can always get others involved in the process.

Draw/design your label.

Apply some PVA glue to the label and the bottle surface, I water mine down slightly.

Once you have applied the label tie some string around or rubber bands to help the label stay in place as it dries.

Just make sure you come up with a good name…

Happy Christmas from Strong Island

Myself and Paul would like to wish all our contributors, readers, supporters and friends a very Happy Christmas. Hopefully I’ll see many of you out and about in Southsea over the next week or so for a few cheeky beverages. Have a great time and if you’re off work give me a buzz.

Hometown Show’s Holiday Hoedown

“I’ve been performing as Hometown Show singing country-folk touring the UK and US since about 2007. The idea for Hometown Show’s Holiday Hoedown initially came around when Joel Ransom asked me to come down to the Express FM studios in Portsmouth to record a Christmas cover for his radio show.

Myself and Joshua Hibberd began knocking ideas around about a Christmas style chat show. A throw-back to the seasonal specials you used to see on TV such as Noels Christmas House Party where celebrity “guests” would show up. We thought that this would be a good platform to promote some of the wonderful musical talent that there is in Portsmouth, so we asked some of our favourite solo-artists to come down and record a Christmas song for us. Those artists were Jonny Bell, Dan Ogus and Andrew Ricks (Champ of The Day).

We shot the show over 3 days and we’re really happy with how its turned out. I hope you enjoy it.”

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
