Strong Island

Digger Barnes, Jimmy Islip & Livers and Lungs @ The Edge of the Wedge

Digger Barnes is a ramblin’ troubadour. His songs are dark portrayals of outlaws, criminals and suicides. Influenced by early roots music, murderballads and gospel tunes he creates his own ghostly universe that could be described best as gothic americana or country noir.

Digger works also as a studio/touring musician and shared stages with Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Tim Barry (Avail), Tom Gabel (Against Me), Ben Nichols (Lucero), Jim Ward (At The Drive-In), Joey Cape (Lagwagon), Austin Lucas, Jon Snodgrass, Frank Turner (Kneejerk) and many more.

Together with visual artist Pencil Quincy he runs the Hamburg/Germany based label BARNES & QUINCY.

Jimmy Islip is a stalwart of the UK punk/emo scene. Having previously played in Eighty Six, Jimmy now divides his time between That Fucking Tank, Milloy and The Magnificent, whilst also playing solo acoustic shows. Check out his spilt with Chuck Ragan, Helen Chambers and Sam Russo.

Livers and Lungs are a 4 piece country outfit. They don’t play very often but are great to see when they do find the time to regale us with thoughtful and touching songs.

Monday the 23rd of January at The Edge of the Wedge, Southsea. £5

Morning sunny Southsea!!! There’s a show tomorrow night at the Fat Fox. We are raising money for Japan. Please come and show support!!! Facebook page

Monday 20th December – The first Annual Southsea Christmas Covers Party

Some of the finest bands in Portsmouth come together to copy a concept from Nottingham – The Annual Christmas Covers Party!

The premise is simple, cram as many bands onto a stage and ask each of them to play three cover songs (not necessarily Christmas songs!). The suggestion is that they should make the original song sound plenty different, change it’s context, or just be damn memorable and funny.

It’s all about bands not taking… themselves too seriously, having a right laugh, and raising as much ca$h as we can for The Rowan’s Hospice.

Entry will be £4. You’ll get more than enough action than you should for that…

Tom Hussey will also be running a carbooty charity bargain basement, expect T-shirts, records and CD’s – all to raise ca$h for our charity Rowans Hospice.

Confirmed so far:

The epic sound that is ATTACK! VIPERS! Portsmouth’s finest hardcore, off the map act, packing all the girth other bands won’t come close to. Back wheels ‘n all. Not in the know? Don’t bother then…

Southsea’s perennial underachievers AEROPLANE ATTACK aim to set the record straight by playing real songs. Not theirs. Some songs might have actual words too! F**K.

BIG SQUIRREL are the original two piece. Garage rock in the key of experience. These silver surfers don’t need to rehearse, they just know.

WATASHI CALCUTECS are not Japanese calculators, they are a 4 piece with only 3 people – fact. A class of mental calculators known as Calcutecs perform cryptography in a sealed-off portion of their brains, the results of which they are unable to access from their normal waking consciousness.

THE MARVELLOUS MECHANICAL BAND step into the breach to play their own brand of prog, jazz beefheart infused shenanigans. Bring your winding up keys… mechanical innit.

SMALL COWBOYS are the first act onstage. They’re virgins, but not like that. I’d like them to sound like the cerebral mix of RL Burnside and disco, but it won’t happen. Will it?

Bands will receive complimentary food noms courtesy of @Fox Chef who is returning to the previous high standard of food the fat fox is famed for. Thanks!

Features

PRIMARY – Extended & Improved

We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:

- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.

- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.

- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!

- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.

- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.

Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.
