Portsmouth on Film – Episode 1

Jonathan & Matthew Ring recently released a book of archive Portsmouth photography that was taken by their grandparents over the years (find out more about the book HERE). As well as photographs they also found a load of footage filmed around the city and have just released their first episode of their Portsmouth on Film.

This episode has some great footage from the early 90s, including some from the Tour de France.

Curxes – Haunted Gold

Local band Curxes released the video for their upcoming single ‘Haunted Gold’ recently, the video involved weeks of painstaking scanning of glitter to create an incredible stop motion animation. Very creative, and the song is something special too.

Dawn Observations 3

Before the rain came down on Saturday morning I managed to get out early with my camera and film a new Dawn Observations edit at the beached wreck on the Langstone Harbour shoreline. Sadly the rain fell after only 20-30 minutes but I managed to film just enough footage in the end.

Civilisation of the Rough Promo Film

Portsmouth On Film

The is an Open Call for your old ‘home-movies’. Have you ever wondered about your personal family history? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes solved his cases from the smallest fragments of evidence. In A Case of Identity (1891) Holmes said that ‘the little things are infinitely the most important’. In a similar way old films or ‘home movies’ can be used as evidence to understand our family history. When we watch these films or look at family photographs we have evidence of our family’s life experiences. These act as a record of our lives, enabling us to build a case for our existence.

For ‘Portsmouth: Family History on Film’ we invite you to rifle through your lofts, cellars or old boxes to find old family films. Films do not have to show Portsmouth city and can be from anywhere in the world although you need to have a connection to the city through living or working in the Portsmouth area. Films can be in Single 8, Super-8, 9,5mm or 16mm. If you have no idea what type of film you have just bring it along and we will be able to screen it or assist you in finding a way to get it seen. Projectors will be provided.

*PLEASE NOTE: FILM ONLY WILL BE ACCEPTED: NOT VIDEOS OR DVD’s.

Collection of films will take place at aspex on Saturday 14 April 2012 (11am – 4pm) with the screening on 18th May (venue to be confirmed).

Initial collection of films will take over the period of a day and contributors will be able to view their films in a more private space before the public screening. Films will be returned to contributors or can be donated to Wessex Sound and Film Archive who will be assisting with transforming the films into digital format. A permanent archive of Portsmouth Films will also be made available on-line.

Any questions please contact Aspex on 02392 778080 or email info@aspex.co.uk.

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
