Gnar Pages – New Skate Zine

I’m a huge fan of self produced zines and have built up a bit of a collection over the years. There is something special about someone wanting to put their photos, words and ideas out there in a DIY, pre-Internet, tactile way.

So needless to say I was stoked to see a new local zine the other day, Gnar Pages by local photographer and skateboarder Eugene Noble. We’ve featured Eugene’s amazing photography previously on a couple of occasions and he is one of Southsea’s young new breed of local creatives and this new zine is really good. Gnar Pages is a sort of skatespot directory featuring some famous and not so famous Portsmouth and Southsea skatespots but also includes Eugene’s own thoughts and memories on the locations.

The zine is free and has been distributed here and there around Southsea so keep your eye’s peeled if you want a copy. You can also check the zine and Eugene’s photography and artwork on Flickr HERE.

1401 Is a home grown skateboard company out of Portsmouth. They currently have two European pressed decks in their range plus hand screened raglan tees screened in Southsea. Great to see a small, local company on the up and we wish them the best of luck!

Dave Stevens (with the help of Steve) documented much of the early 2000s skateboarding in Southsea, with Dave’s first video Hate Portsmouth Love Southsea covering 2001 to 2004. The video came out on DVD originally but the titles are now online (including some skating by our very own Tristan):

Southsea Skatepark is now operated by Southsea Skatepark Company, a registered charity set up by a small group of park supporters to take over the park from Portsmouth City Council. They hold the park on a 60 year lease from the council and have an Agreement which includes a reducing revenue subsidy for the first 5 years. To carry out the large scale improvements needed to make the park viable in the longer term, they are seeking grants and sponsorship. If you have any good ideas, we’d like to hear from you via their website.

You can also Support Southsea Skatepark by buying a selection of hats, stickers and tee shirts, ideal Christmas gifts. These are now available to buy at the skatepark. See the website for opening times and directions – http://www.southseaskatepark.com/

Old Skateboards needed

Southsea Skatepark is looking for old skateboards to be donated as part of a fundraising drive. These will then be recycled into products made and designed by local artists and makers in the city with a percentage of profits going to the skatepark.

If you have any skateboards that you don’t use or are broken then please drop them into the skatepark. Please leave your name and contact details as we would like to include a history of the board on the product tags. Further information on where and how to buy the products will be revealed soon. Below are some prototypes and also testing the cutting.

Ten Tricks with Phil Russell

Bored represent’e and Blueprint flow rider Phil Russell has a mad banging ten tricks for Kingpin Magazine down at Hove Lagoon. You’d be hard pressed to spread more butter on that toasty skatepark. Late kickflip (had to watch that a few times) is a touch. Filmed and edited by Sam Bailey.

The Skate Pub Quiz

Know your smith grinds from your feebles? Strong Island, Southsea Skatepark and Little Johnny Russells are hosting a skateboarding themed pub quiz at LJRs on Wednesday 26th October with a load of prizes up for grabs. It’s only £2 per person entry with teams of up to two people, all money will go to the skatepark charity. The last time we ran this it was a busy night and a lot of fun, hope to see you there this time.
