Groundlings Theatre Company Grand Opening

Some interesting news from my PCC mole today. Groundlings Theatre Company has recently won the bid to buy The Old Beneficial School in Portsea. This stunning historic grade II star listed building will be brought back to life providing a wonderful focal point for the area.

Opening with West Side Story and boasting it’s own Drama School, TV Studio with green screen, office space for hire, 10 costumes in their wardrobe department and of course it’s very own theatre with original Georigian decor.

This is a brand new venture with a proposed opening date of April 2010. The theatre will seat 180 in Proscenium arch format and for dinner theatre we expect to seat 120 guests. Oliver!

“Please sir, I want some more.” Oliver’s innocent request lands him in trouble with the workhouse Matron and the Beadle and sets him on his famous adventure. Kings Theatre Open Day

Following the success of last year’s event The Kings Theatre will be once again opening the Spring season with an open day event on Saturday 23rd January from 10.00am – 5.00pm. Now is your chance to get behind the scenes and discover the secrets of the theatre:

Drama:

Professional Workshops for all ages, and your chance to join the new Kings Youth Theatre.

Dance:

Professional workshops for children, Street Dance, and your chance to audition for the English Youth Ballet.

Art and Literature:

Be inspired by the theatre’s wonderful archive items and create a piece in response. The workshops will be lead by two professional artists and are available to adults and children. In collaboration with Aspex Gallery and the Libaries Service.

Film:

Filming of the documentary The Kings throughout history. What can you remember? This is your chance to tell the Theatre what you love about The Kings. In collaboration with City Eye. The theatre will also be screening The Caretaker (filmed at The Kings in 2009).

Technical:

Trips to the Fly Floor, Lighting Desk and Follow Spot demonstrations.

Plus stage make up, dressing up, meet the characters, tours, presentations and a heritage display throughout the day. Tickets are only £2.50 and all the workshops are free.

The NEWS Guide Awards – Vote Phil Whiteman

Local Skater Phillip Whiteman is on the way to becoming a big producer. His 1st national tour which came to Portsmouth last year has been nominated for Best Professional Production going up against bigiwig Chichester Festival Theatre. Vote for him to win and get skaters coming to the Theatre more……

The Blue Room by David Hare

For only one night, David Hare’s ‘The Blue Room’ – Based on Schnitzler’s ‘La Ronde’ – will be on at the New Theatre Royal on Wednesday September 2nd 2009 at 7:30pm. 2007’s News Guide Award Best Actress winner Francesca McCrohon has brought together a full cast of other notable area talents for her final Portsmouth stage appearance before taking her place at the London drama School, East 15. All proceeds will go towards her tuition fees…come and support Francesca whilst enjoying a rare, fully staged performance of this masterpiece of love and lust. Tickets are £8 and £6 concessions. Please note that this play contains strong language and adult content.

Bench Theatre Presents ‘Road’

Havant Arts Centre will be home to Bench Theatre’s production of ‘Road’ by Jim Cartwright. The play is all about a Road in Lancashire, set in the 1980’s when England was under Margaret Thatcher’s government and the effects that her policies were having upon society.

There are two blocks of performance dates, Thursday 16th July – Saturday 18th followed by Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th. The performances start at 7:30 pm and will finish at 10pm, 10:30 pm at the very latest. Tickets are £8 for adults and £6 for concessions. TWO FOR ONE OFFERS (cheapest ticket free) apply for the following performance dates: Thursday 16th July and Tuesday 21st July.

Jonathan Larson’s ‘Rent’

Award winning local theatre company CCADS are proud to present the area premiere of the ‘Seasons Of Love’ musical, RENT at The New Theatre Royal from 3rd to the 6th of June.

This Pulitzer Prize winning update of ‘La Boheme’ is set against the gritty background of New York’s East Village and follows a group of struggling bohemians as they strive for success and acceptance whilst enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and AIDS. It is warm but poignant, tragic but incredibly uplifting and energizing…a piece that speaks to all who see it and features one of modern theatre’s most stunning musical scores.
