On Thursday the 16th of June, students from BA Illustration at The University of Portsmouth are holding a fundraising event to help raise funds for their attendance to New Designers. See their degree show website here - http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/illustration/IP/2011/
New Designers is a graduate fair held in London every year. It provides an opportunity for recent graduates to display their work, and for the art industry to survey and celebrate the newest talents.
Entry is free and there will be live music from local bands, as well as a raffle with prizes donated from various Albert Road shops and establishments such as The Kings’ Theatre, Flo & Stan’s and Dead Man’s Glory. They also have a Facebook Page.
The workshop will look at the current popular style of paper cutting. Looking particularly at the work of contemporary illustrator/designer Rob Ryan.

I posted a few days ago about a competition that NME are running to find Britain’s best small venue. Well, great news The Wedgewood Rooms has made the final shortlist for the South East category!
This really is a great accolade not only for them should they win, but the city also. Get involved and cast your vote here and hopefully we will see them win the award I believe they deserve.
Friends of Strong Island Lorna and Del have finally opened their shop on Albert Road called ‘Flo & Stan’s’. I popped in over the weekend to check out the place and take some photos. The home boutique shop sells a range of quirky, vintage and retro products including work by local artists. I bought a gorgeous old Hollywood, Los Angeles vintage tray and a New York original decal. They also had an amazing 3D Viewmaster of HMS Victory for sale. Go and check the shop out sometime soon.
Visit Del and Lorna’s new shop at 29 Albert Road this Saturday. Strong Island wish them a successful venture. Wonderful to have another independent shop in the city. Love Albert Road.
The University of Portsmouth Brightsparks Entrepreneurial Society are hosting the entertainment extravaganza ‘The Not So Royal Variety Show’ at the Kings Theatre, Southsea. This is the first time that they have had the opportunity to showcase the talent from the University of Portsmouth in one of the largest professional theatres in the south. This event will take place on Tuesday, 5th April, 2011 at Kings Theatre, Southsea from 7pm and is open to all.
The show will consist of music, dance, comedy and more from a variety of different societies, clubs and individuals involved within the Students Union. The aim is to create a show that the Brightsparks Enterprise Society can repeat annually that involves the entire University and the Community of Portsmouth.

Some of the headlining acts are Keli Anne B (portsmouth’s poet laureate), Chris Whitelock (Magician), Heart of Blondie (cover band) and The Heavy Hands Comedy Society. Come along and be part of the show.
The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £7 for general public and £5 for concessions. For more information on the event please contact: contact@uopbrightsparks.com.
On Friday I went out with my knitting and covered a tree by Bellamy’s Antiques, Albert Road. I decided to use vibrant colours and some glow in the dark wool. It is known as Yarn Bombing – a way to add some brightness to streets. Fark brought an old skateboard that he custom painted and this was turned it into a swing and hung from the same tree.
Loads of laughs and fun comments from people. Below are some pictures / videos and Debbie Parker from Bellamy’s Antiques on the swing.
Garbo’s Hair Salon have turned a wall space in their Albert Road branch into an art gallery. There will be a monthly exhibition of work by BA Fine Art students at The University of Portsmouth. Jimie Russell at Garbo’s said “we have always had a vision to do something with the space and felt that promoting local artists was a great way to do this”. Last year the space was used to promote the Southsea Deck Your Chairs project.
Nick Forbes is now in his final year and has worked with other students to get a rotation of work featured. “This is a great opportunity to get student work viewed around the city”.
The first student featured is Steve Chivalry with a piece of work entitled ‘When You Know You Love Them’. It was made using an old cardboard box. Steve work uses a lot of different materials and he tries to incorporate installation, sculpture and painting.
Jimie pictured above with Steve and Nick.
All artists work featured at Garbo’s will be for sale and you can see the work from today at 11-13 Albert Road, Southsea.
Captain Josie is running around the deck like a drunken Pirate making sure everything is ship shape for this Saturdays annual Southsea Fest. With more bands than you could shake a Cutlass at, this year is going to be HUGE.
All the information you need regarding bands, times & tickets can be found over at southseafest.com and Facebook.
Remember to keep Albert Road tidy & enjoy it. With loads of love form cap’n n crew at Southsea Fest.
Desparado Beer is not only one of the sponsors for Southsea Fest, but are also kindly donating to the Strong Island Birthday Party Raffle. Cheers to Andy at Desparado Beer for hooking us up. ANother great prize is added to the pile.
Just a quick post on behalf of Mike Hassanyeh at Chilli Tattoo on Albert Road. He has an approximate 20 x 7ft space on the side of his shop he is opening up to any graffiti artists to use. Any potential artists can contct Mike by email at wanderingbrush@hotmail.com or alternatively pop by and see him at the shop at 58 Albert Road to discuss ideas.
Hopefully this will be a nice new addition to some of the great art pieces that are popping up in the Albert Road area.
As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.
We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.
To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.
Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
