Local photographic artist Diana Goss MSc ARPS is celebrating some more International Salon acceptances with a 50% success rate of the 8 images she submitted to the Swansea International Photographic Salon this month
Ellie Lauren Kirk a photography student at Havant college featured in this one (Sweet child of mine) when she undertook her work placement with Diana whilst she was at Oaklands School. Mica Lee also a former Oaklands pupil featured in another. (Remember when we used to play)
Another local young lady Stephanie Gudelos modelled for Diana whilst Diana was teaching the Filipino Photographic Society some studio lighting techniques. ” I called the picture Darkness, says Diana “as it has a threefold meaning for me. I like to play with light and dark to create dramatic images, I love shooting at night and I shot this at a dark stage in my life.” Of course I am thrilled with it’s result. All my models are very beautiful young women.
De Molen was shot on a long exposure whilst Diana was visiting her family in Holland last year.
Diana teaches her specialism night time photography, technical and practical with her creative stance both on the camera club circuit and on a private group basis. Her most recent teaching was on the Square Tower roof at midnight last week with local models, which we will feature soon.

We have featured local photographer Diana Goss a few times on Strong Island, recently she has been a very busy bee. As well as winning an international award Diana has also been lecturing on photography at Portsmouth University and travelling the country teaching and delivering presentations on her creative photography style. Friend and fellow landscape photographer Andy Wilson has put together a short film featuring some of Diana’s finest work (shown below).
Diana is available to book for her photography presentations and practical night time photography tutorials where you can explore both the technical skills, techniques and details and the deeper concepts behind the compositions. If you want to book a tutorial or talk or find out more either phone her on 07770 453 693 or check www.notmagnum.co.uk.
One of Portsmouth’s local photographer’s and friend of Strong Island Diana Goss has just received two acceptances for the Southampton International Salon, which is quite some achievement out of over some 10,000 images.
The first image was ‘a n a h a t a‘. This is a self portrait taken at the Cove in the ancient monolithic site in Avebury. These two stones were chosen as they are believed to be the first stones erected and represent the male and female elements of the site. In between these two stones, it is said, exists a vortex of energy which is at its most powerful when the moon shines through those two stones in particular. a n a h a t a is just one of a body work where Diana is using photography to process her life’s challenges and transitions.
The other successful image was’ The Quirky Couple‘. Diana is a night time photographer and even on her commercial work such as wedding photography (and portraiture) she encourages her customers to venture into the night time with her to record their significant life events too. Debbie and Graham, local to Portsmouth, came out at night in their wedding costumes to experience this vibe with her. This image featured the exhibition held locally at the Kitsch d’or restaurant and has also featured in Portsmouth News
Here are a few words from Diana herself. “I have a passion for expressing light in creative ways at night. Lucky enough to grow up in a family of photographers my early years were spent rocking developer trays, holding the hose into the developer tank and hanging out dripping wet images in a little green caravan by the side of the house. My father would often disappear for days on end in this quirky little darkroom.
From those early days watching the light and shadows develop before me, I was hooked on the mystery and subtlety of the interplay of light and exposures. I adore the challenge of night photography. Obtaining light out of the darkness just thrills me. The still of the night holds an ambience for me unlike any other time for shooting. In the night time I become aware of universality of everything, the palpability of earths rotation. The interplay of light, dark, time, (creative vision) and circumstance can amount to much uncertainty but the pay off for such mysterious unknowings is peace, freedom and initiation into the secrets of the night. When others sleep I find a restless desire to explore the endless possibilities hidden in the dark.”
More of her self portrait work will be on display at the Strong Island Round Tower exhibition which begins on the 6th April 2011. More information on the exhibition can be found at www.theroundtower.co.uk and of course by checking up regularly right here on strong-island.co.uk.

Local Photographer Diana Goss recently got in contact with us regarding a local exhibition this SUnday 28th & Monday 30th of August.
“As you well know Southsea boasts a vast array of artistic and creative talent. Maggie Ambler has decided to open her house Bank Holiday weekend to showcase creative work by talented local artists as she feels there are not enough venues for doing this locally. I have been invited to exhibit at Maggies Open Studio which is really nice and very close to me.
Maggie decided to use her home to showcase the artwork as this is where she likes to be creative and explore how colour can be used. Maggie will be exhibiting her textile work and the murals she is currently creating.
This event offers the public the opportunity to view a range of high quality work including textiles, glassware, jewellery, photography and wall paintings. The exhibition features work by Maggie and textile artist Chantelle Cheshire, glass designer Julie Dickson, jewellery designer Katherine Webber and photography by Diana Goss.
The exhibition runs from Sunday 29th and Monday 30th August from 10 am to 5 pm at 76 Collingwood Road, Southsea PO5 2QZ. Admission is free and some of the work will be for sale. Contact Maggie Ambler: Telephone 07789 286192″
Local photographer Diana Goss has been shortlisted for Digital Photographer of the Year, a big congratulations from us at Strong Island and fingers crossed for a win. Below is the entered image, check out Diana’s Flickr for loads more great photos. Good work Diana!
A familiar and friendly face around Albert Road, Diana Goss is a freelance creative portrait photographer with her own studio and whilst based in Southsea is often found all over Portsmouth as well as Bournemouth and Brighton too. Specialising in both Fashion and Boudoir work (see www.laboudoir.co.uk), and going by her website (www.notmagnum.co.uk) and Flickr obviously enjoys any type of people portraiture both in the studio and outside at such events as Goodwood Revival, music shows, weddings and even equine work. Not only that but you most likely have seen a few of her common props around town, a 1960′s Bentley, a 1955 Oldsmobile in red with red leather seats and a 1960′s red Pontiac!
Some of Diana’s work is available in Albert Road in Matt Sills’s Wallspace gallery (you may have also picked up a few free prints during the last Albert Road day) and if you’re interested in any commission work such as model shoots and portfolios, event photography or are interested in modelling for one of Diana’s photography projects give Diana a shout via email.
This is a cross processed film shot Diana took of the Wallspace Gallery with her namesake camera, a Lomo Diana and below that are a few more examples of her work:
We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:
- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.
- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.
- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!
- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.
- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.
Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.
