Today is the last day of The Strong Island Exhibition at The Round Tower, Old Portsmouth. It is open from 10am – 3pm. Last chance for you to buy exclusive work by over 30 local creatives. It has been such a success with over 4,000 people visiting in 2 weeks. Thanks to all the support we have had and big thanks to Fark for all his help and enthusiasm. Photographs below of some of the visitors and also limited edition screenprints by Portsmouth University BA Graphic Design student Kingsley Nebechi.

The last day of hanging the work went very well with loads of people on hand to help out. Ian Parmiter came by with his torpedo as part of the props, Malcolm Irving from Irving Brewers dropped off the Strong Island Hopper Ale, All About Tea delivered more Strong Island Tea and Beth from University Catering brought the nibbles and soft drinks.
By 6.30pm the place was heaving and an incredible turnout. Tristan, Paul and I were pretty impressed with the numbers – in excess of 500 people! the tower was crammed full with hardly any space to move. We ran out of Strong Island Hopper quite early so apologies for those of you that never got to try any.
Thanks to all the creatives that have taken part, all working to the theme ‘Strong Island’ and thanks to everyone that came along and made it a night to remember. Jack Palmer and Will McNicol thanks for the music. The unofficial after party took place in the oldest pub in Portsmouth – The Dolphin, and again many pints of local Irving Ale went down well.
A few pictures below of the last minute preparations and the evening launch party. Much thanks to Fark for the help this past week and curating. Pop in and say hi to him. Will be posting up more photographs during the coming week. Please send us your images.
Remember that the exhibition runs from Tues to Sun 10-3pm until 1st May. Go and snap up the work and support the local creative movement. The shop also stocks work from Badger Press, Southsea Gallery, aspex, Bored of Southsea, Southsea Skatepark, Jodie Silsby, James Weaver, All About Tea and Strong Island tees, totes, notebooks and much more.
Once again thanks to all of the people that have been along to see the exhibition and the venue already.Remember to add your feedback to the comments book.

The Caravan Gallery needs your help to create a growing participatory exhibition celebrating the unique character of Portsmouth, not just the obvious things but unfamiliar, overlooked details and hidden secrets.
Go for a walk, take some photos, eavesdrop a few conversations, make notes, collect things. An entire wall will be set aside for your observations. Come along and complete an unusually entertaining Portsmouth survey, make a postcard or souvenir, record a video portrait, add something to our map. Space gallery will become a centre for urban exploration for a month, an alternative visitor information centre. This is your chance to help The Caravan Gallery create The People’s Guide to Portsmouth!
See the Pride of Place Project Facebook page and also please take the online survey – signed copies of the ‘Is Britain Great’ book as prizes.

We are now in the final stages of putting the exhibition together and all work has been handed in from over 30 local creatives. Tristan, Paul & I have been overwhelmed by the positive response by everyone involved and the quality and breadth of work is pretty incredible.
All the work featured in the exhibition will be for sale. There will also be some Strong Island goodies for sale – tees, stickers, tote bags and badges. The exhibition is open to the public at the Round Tower, Old Portsmouth from 16th April – 1st May. A shop is currently being made by Carl, Miguel and Oliver from Deer Park Alpha and this will feature work by Jodie Silsby, James Weaver, Badger Press, Bored of Southsea, French, aspex and many more including some of the exhibitors. A Strong Island bike is being made by Stu Trett and Chris Borneo and All About Tea are developing a special Strong Island Tea.

Would you like to help The Caravan Gallery create their latest exhibition at SPACE gallery?
The exhibition is called PRIDE OF PLACE PROJECT – A People’s Perspective.
Details – PORTSMOUTH VIDEO PORTRAITS
“We need short videos of people telling us what they think is special about Portsmouth. We need a wide section of the community of all ages and occupations.
Each piece will last from 5 to 30 seconds so we need a brief, interesting or amusing anecdote which gives the viewer a personal and unusual insight to the city, whatever you opinion. It could be about a place, a feeling, an occurrence, a meeting, a smell, a person or something you have seen. In fact anything that is special to you and to do with Portsmouth.
Alongside the video we will also take a still portrait for the exhibition which you are welcome to keep at the end of the show.
If you would like to contribute please get in touch so we can arrange the filming. It would be very useful if you could think about your response and have a little practice in advance so that you know it fits our timeframe. Don’t forget, it can be a one liner or a short story but must be from a personal perspective – the more imaginative the better. We look forward to hearing from you.”

All is finally revealed and we have some rather exciting news for you today. It’s our announcement of the 1st Strong Island local creatives exhibition at The Round Tower in Old Portsmouth. The Round Tower and surrounding buildings are currently being turned into a contemporary creative quarter and for the past two years extensive work has been done to clear out the interiors, fix leaks and identify usage.
The Round Tower is now soon to be opened as a continuing gallery space and Strong Island are proud to be involved in the very first exhibition. Over 30 local creatives have been invited to participate and we will soon be revealing the names. You can follow the progress of the gallery space and each individual creative over at www.theroundtower.co.uk. Paul Gonella is currently making a documentary of the progress leading up the exhibition and this will be available to view on the website in due course.
We will be making a pretty huge thing of this in the coming weeks and really hope that you can all make it down to have a look and say hello. Remember it’s you the readers, contributors, creatives and locals that make Strong Island what it is and this exhibition is a direct result of this. We appreciate everything that people have done for us to reach this point. Having the first exhibition at The Round Tower is a huge honour for us, and we must say a incredible thank you to Claire Sambrook who has arranged and helped organise the whole thing.
Dates of the exhibition: Launch Night – Friday 15th April from 6pm. Open to the public 16th April – 1st May 10-3pm.
Posters and Logo have been designed by Tristan Savage and the website by Paul Gonella. Thanks to Stephan, Paul and Jack from Badger Press for helping with the screen-printed posters.
