Best of Hayling Skatepark 2010

We’ve been posting up the Sam Way/Herbal Skateboards monthly edits all through 2010, always good to see what’s going on over on Hayling Island. Sam Way posted up the other day a ‘Best Of’ edit of all the best bits filmed at Hayling Island skatepark through 2010. Some amazing skating went down. Looking forward to checking the 2011 monthly edits.

Hayling Ferry back in service after passing checks.

The Hayling Ferry will resume service today, January 4th after passing its third safety inspection. The Pride of Hayling, which travels between Eastney and Hayling Island, was inspected by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the vessel was stopped from carrying passengers last month after failing its annual safety checks.

The vessel can now resume its service between Hayling Island and Eastney. The vessel’s owner and skipper worked hard to resolve the issues with the vessel’s safety management system and we’re now satisfied with all aspects of the vessel’s operation.

The ferry has been running for more than 200 years, linking Hayling Island to Portsmouth. It is used by schoolchildren to get to school each day and can travel up to 30 times a day during the week. The only alternative to the three-minute ferry ride is a 32-mile round trip by road.

Hayling Ferry Out of Action

I wasn’t aware of this until yesterday but the Hayling Island Ferry has been out of action for a little while. The ferry was stopped due to some issues raised during it’s inspection but still isn’t back in action. The ferry is a key link to Portsea from Hayling and you can find out more about the situation here.

I thought it was best to mention this incase anyone was off on a round-Langstone Harbour bike ride or run. This also means no drinking in the Ferryboat Inn for a while too…

P.S. If you have any photos of or taken on the ferry please pop a link to them as a comment, we would love to see them.

March at Hayling Island Skatepark

Sam Way gave us a heads up on a new edit of footage filmed during March of a bunch of the Hayling Island skaters, sick as always.

New Section of Hayling Billy Trail

Hayling Billy trail is a really popular cycling, running and even horse riding trail that runs along the Langstone Harbour edge of Hayling Island. On the 26th February a new section of the trail will be opened to the public by David Willets MP, portfolio holder Jenny Wride along with Simon Pratt from Sustrans. The opening starts at Havant Road Langstone at the junction with Mill Lane at 10.30 am and then there will be tea and coffee at the Sailing Club after the opening with a small display showing future joint cycle improvement and safe routes to school projects that Sustrans, HCC and HBC are intending to carry out within the Borough over the next 18 months.

Hayling Billy also runs past the old Oyster Beds at the northerly point of the island, are a great place to visit to spot birds this time of year.

Herbal Skateboards

Literally hailing from Hayling Island, the Herbal Skateboards crew have been killing it not just locally but all over the country for years now. I’ve known about them for a while now through SFGFC friend Rory at work and his tales of Marcus Payne the home town hero. No shit though, he kills it. I heard he broke his arm pretty bad a while back and is now up and rolling again. Check his Herbal Skateboards comeback section at Crawley. Noille flip backtail revert for the win.

Island Hopping

Last Saturday a small group of us rode off Portsea to cruise over to Hayling Island and meet up with the girls and also JGDD and her entourage outside The Ferry Boat. At only £2 a pint and with various meal deals it makes for a nice change to hop over the drink and have a few beers with a different view for a change.

West Hayling Local Nature Reserve

On Saturday morning we passed through the West Hayling Local Nature Reserve (in Langstone Harbour) whilst on a bike ride along the Hayling Billy coastal path. In recent years the area has been heavily re-landscaped from the old rubbish tip back in to oysterbeds (as it was from Roman times right up to the first world war). This redevelopment was undertaken to provide a safe and secure habitat for wildlife. The reserve is a haven for sea birds at all times of the year and is also home to Little Terns, one of Britain’s rarest breeding birds.

The nature reserve can be easily accessed and enjoyed by bike using the Billy coastal path (like we did) but there is also car parking available if necessary and the whole area is great for walks with great views over the harbour, well worth a visit as it is only minutes from Portsmouth. Click here for more information and a full history of the reserve.

PRIMARY – Extended & Improved

We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:

- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.

- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.

- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!

- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.

- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.

Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.
