Mark Webb – Full English

Effraim has sent us through some more BMX footage, this time of Southsea very own Mark Webb. We did a post on Mark before, a short film entitled Mark by video students from Portsmouth University.

I’m not sure what the background for this footage is, but it’s off the hook. This guy kills it. Check out the slow motion 900 on the quarter pipe. Nuts.

Southsea Sessions

A little Easter flatland session with Effraim Catlow and Pete Hollinger down at Southsea Skatepark. Cheers for the video link Effraim. Crazy skills. I can hardly even wheelie so I stick to skids and riding real fast…..

Vintage Southsea Skatepark

Bored Manager Tom sent us over this original Skatepark article and poster. It doesn’t get more back in the day than this really. The original proposal plan and the opening day poster. At last Skateboard Paradise. Truly amazing. The article is quite small, but I zoomed it to read back the first paragraph.

‘Skatepark plan caters for all plus band and roller skating. Fast elevated runs and steep twisting slalom – like tracks for the advanced skateboarder, are a design feature of the £60,000 skateboard arena proposed for Southsea Common’

Skate The Plank Re-View at LJR this Sunday

Last year at some pint, The Skate The Plank Film was premeired at Little Johnny Russells and went a bit wonky. We re putting it on again. Maybe this is to remind people that we like skateboarding or we can see how much better we ve got since, or maybe its to inspire who evers making the next one to hurry up. Or because we couldn’t see at the last one and everything broke?

Lets remind ourselves its a fun affair and maybe this shouldn t be taken so seriously. If you are sponsored or Pro then there is no excuse! Skate the PLank is a bunch of friends skate boarding and for this last night ever till god knows when, drinking also. Two things we’re good at, come spectate. Facebook Group

Skatepark Fundraiser Photos Part 2

What an evening! Gambling, art, breakers, friends, messy dancing, eclectic music, putting all my money on red 14, Jim ‘The Price is Right’ Barber, statue guy upstairs, Bored fundraiser room, all the skaters and all the madcap people that made for an amazing night. Well done to everyone who helped put this night together and to all the people who helped raise money by attending.

Even though I said I would only stay for a few I saw things through until the lights came on when the night was over, so excuse the dad cam photos as I got quite involved in the end.

Skatepark Fundraiser Photos Part 1

Friday night’s skatepark fundraiser was amazing. Particular highlights were Jim Barber’s Play Your Cards Right with the dolly dealers, the hectic roulette table, the DJs, the dancing, the art, the music and most importantly the people. Southsea and Portsmouth turned up in force. By the sounds of it well over £1000 was raised for the new mini ramp too. Big thanks to everyone who helped organise the event.

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
