South Parade Pier

Sunday Photography Walk

A photography walk has been arranged for Sunday at 10am meeting initially at South Parade Pier before then setting off along the prom towards Old Portsmouth. It’s free and open to all. Some of the members of the Solent Camera Club are also going too.

Looking at the weather report, it could be sunny…fingers crossed.

Pier at Sunset

The sun setting over South Parade Pier is a view from Southsea beach all of us have experienced yet never gets old. This photo was taken by ‘Southsea Dave’, check his Flickr HERE to see loads more great local photos.

South Parade Pier – Readers Photos

Last month we did a post on South Parade Pier and ‘How the Pier used to look‘. We asked you the readers had any photos of the pier you’d like to send over.

Lauren McPeak and Phil Bennett Austen McLean, Steve Langton and James Kellam kindly sent over some of their photos. A wonderful sun flare capture with the classic seagull flying above from Lauren, a cool Holga pinhole shot from Phil, Bosh 06 long walk from Austen, night time reflections with the tide out from Steve and a panoramic from James. Cheers guys. Always nice to see peoples own perspectives on familiar sights.

Art on the Pier

A quick reminder that Art on the Pier will be running today and tomorrow on South Parade Pier, from 10am to 5pm. This popular local arts event has been run a few times and is always a good turnout of local exhibitors including artists, designers, jewellers, photographers, etc.

Breakneck and Ram Records – Video

Nice edit from Mota filmed at the Breakneck, UpDnB and Ram Records night back in February. No doubt a heavy, heavy evening down on the pier.

Lex & Fark

I am always thrilled to discover little delights during my morning dog walks down the seafront and this morning was no exception.

Local street artists Lex and Fark have been busy again around South Parade Pier. Putting some colour and fun into the sometimes bland view.

Dawn Observations at The Pier

I posted this up on Forever Circling the other day but thought it might be okay up on here too. I’ve been out taking photos at dawn in Portsmouth & Southsea off and on for a couple of years now but the other Saturday was my first time filming HD footage with a D-SLR (A Canon 60D with 50mm lens). This edit was filmed on and around South Parade Pier just after dawn.

Below is the edit in SD but is way better viewed in HD here.

A wander down the Pier

I took a wander down the pier this Sunday to have a look at Art On The Pier. It was a very varied showcase of art and crafts.

Chantelle Cheshire presented her Twelve Floors Up products including cute soft toys and a gorgeous blanket that was designed with drawings from her daughter. Divine Aesthetic were selling Tricorn and Southsea type inspired prints and tees.

More information on the event will be posted soon.

Tommy (1975) at The Kings Theatre

This Saturday 25th September, in association with Portsmouth Film Society, The Kings Theatre are showing Tommy in the venue where it was filmed. The Who’s landmark Rock Opera was shot at a number of locations around Portsmouth and the classic Pinball Wizard scene with Elton John was filmed inside the Kings Theatre itself! The Portsmouth Film Festival brings ‘Tommy’ back to the Kings as part of this years event.

Portsmouth Film Festival are producing a short film which documents people who were involved in the making of Tommy at locations in Portsmouth featured in the Film including The Kings Theatre with their memories, their own films and photo footage of the time. This will be shown as a prelude to the main feature film Tommy. The film will then be followed by a live tribute band, ‘Who’s Next’, making this a fantastic live music and cinematic experience!

You can also view a short article about Tommy, South Parade Pier & other facts over at ITV Meridian Tonight HERE.

Tickets: £10, £5 for students, £2 off for Concessions, Box Office 02392 828282, www.kings-southsea.com

PRIMARY – Extended & Improved

We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:

- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.

- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.

- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!

- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.

- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.

Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.
