Roller Disco at Southsea Skatepark

Five days you work. One whole day to play. Come on everybody, wear your rollerskates today. It’s Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, it’s Saturday, Saturday, it’s Saturday, Saturday, it’s Saturday-ayyyyy

For the old dogs, rippers & grommets…

…the Southsea vert ramp is BACK in action at the now independent and charity run Skatepark. Thanks to the Southsea Skatepark Volunteer group for their hard work getting it back open in time for Vert Wednesdays! Rip it up guys. I want body jars, inverts and smith grind tail grabs. Sick.

Kevin Peraza at Southsea

An incredible edit of Kevin Peraza’s trip to the south of the UK, the first half filmed at Southsea Skatepark. What can you say…some mental riding, absolutely killing the rink ramps. So good that Southsea is right up there on the international map of BMX.

Southsea Skatepark News

Southsea Skatepark had it’s weekend long re-opening event last weekend with a huge turnout by both skatepark users and spectators, amazing to see and be part of. The skatepark is now independently run and free from the council and the enthusiasm for the future is compelling with repairs, new ramps, the new cafe & shop plus many amazing things in the pipeline. Below are a few photos from the weekend, you can see more of Matt Maber’s photos at matthewmaber.com and Laura Jane’s photos at her Flicker HERE.

To keep up with what is happening visit the new Southsea Skatepark website and blog that went up this week. The website will be updated regularly with news and events plus archives of photos and video to be added soon. If you have any old images that you would like to be included get in touch.

Southsea Skatepark Reopening This Weekend

A quick reminder that the skatepark is celebrating it’s reopening under new charity run management with a weekend long event. Hope to see you down there!

Mark Webb – The New Gap

The new gap at Southsea Skatepark (from the rink to the new miniramp) is something a few people might have imagined doing but there is really only one person who would, and has, stepped up. Hard to appreciate just how mental this is, serious danger potential…!

Southsea Skatepark Opening Weekend – Posters

In celebration of the handover of  Southsea Skatepark from the council to the new skatepark charity trust there will be an open weekend on 2nd/3rd April.

A call for posters to advertise the planned events has been made to local artists, designers, photographers etc. All the posters will be printed up and displayed in the skatepark and also circulated around the city.

Many thanks to all those who are taking part. The first posters finished are below and more will be posted over the coming week:

Ged Wells

Ged Wells was the Isle of Wight’s best export back in the late 80s and early 90s when it came to skateboarding, streetwear and art. With an original, unique eye with both his skating and artwork and that channelled in to his Insane clothing label Ged quickly elevated himself to appearing in national magazines, clothing appearing on music and film stars and even opening a boutique store in London…all before the 90s really even got started.

Ged has placed on his Flickr an archive of artwork and photos related to the Insane clothing label and it is well worth a look through. Included in that collection are some photos of Ged skating Southsea Skatepark and ripping way ahead of his time, check this Stalefish Wallride way back in the mid 80s. Radness.

The 2nd Strong Island Ale – Dry Dock No. 1

As you may know each year we run a home brew competition in February where the winning brew has the opportunity to be brewed by Irving & Co Brewing Co. and sold around the city in the summer. Last year’s brew, the Strong Island Hopper Ale, was hugely successful being one of Inving’s best selling ales and selling out so quickly it went through a second brew run. This year’s winning ale is Dry Dock No. 1, originally brewed by Lee Immins, went on sale in some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s pubs over the weekend.

We spoke to The Hole in The Wall in Southsea who said the new ale went down a storm with it being their best seller on Sunday and with almost two barrels empty by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Those guys at the Hole in The Wall and their regular ale drinkers know their stuff so for us this was amazing early news with the ale.

To officially launch Dry Dock No. 1 we are having a launch party with the lovely souls at The Belle Isle on Thursday evening. The ale will be on full flow, come down and try a pint or two. As well as being on sale all around the city the ale will also be available in Chichester’s Belle Isle too, so you can drink it away from home for the first time too.

The Isle Of Wight Randonnee 2012 – Team Strong Island

Just over a year ago, a group of Strong Islanders were sat on the Isle of Wight ferry on our way to the yearly Randonnee cycling event; 60 miles around the island spread across 5 checkpoints. Whilst on the crossing we couldn’t help but admire various enthusiasts and their custom team jerseys. Fast forward a year and it is my great pleasure to unveil the Strong Island cycling jersey. Made as a one off for the event, the jersey is our way of representing this city and all the values that come with it. Thanks to the combined designing efforts of Chris Ballingall and Tristan Savage, we were able to produce this clean, retro looking jersey that 11 of Southsea’s finest could wear to conquer the island’s endless hills. Well done chaps.
