Last years event

I realised I had done one of these over a year ago, and although the day was very different it was kinda similar. Spending the day doing art education and outreach stuff, good food, good friends and the seaside.
‘I started the day heading down to Aspex at Gunwharf where I work in learning and participation. I had to finish off editing some films made with kids during half-term inspired by Japanese Monster B-Movies, I’m a pretty rubbish with tech. I learnt how to upload to Vimeo (dont laugh). I then when to lunch and ate Gyoza Dumplings, with loads of chili oil on rice, getting fuelled up for Sugarcubes. Sugarcubes is an afterschool club we run with St Georges in Portsea, the kids come over to Aspex once a week. Some of the kids have never been outside of Portsmouth, had a holiday etc. I heard one lad say that he loved being with us in the gallery and didn’t want to leave! I get plenty of hugs, sit and draw and talk about art with them. After work I cooked dinner, then went out to the One Eyed Dog to enjoy listening to some quality tunes from Pet Sounds, shooting pool and having a few shants. We then swung by the seafront to the luminous Golden Horseshoe, if only I’d had some two pences on me!’

So many shops and businesses are continuing to support local artists and designers on Albert Road. It really is so refreshing to see the explosion of creative talent in the city being fully embraced. The road has always celebrated an independent and community spirit which harnesses and promotes ‘local’.
Southsea Gallery has long been promoting this creativity and has a dedicated section in their gallery selling prints by locals. Recent additions include Ken Leung, Weaver, Jodie Silsby, Mark Persaud, Kate Cooke, Alex Ings, Kingsley Nebechi and our very own Tristan Savage. Loving the Salty Old Sea Dog by Kate Cooke. Many of these also took part in the Strong Island exhibition at the Round Tower back in April when nearly 6,000 people came through the doors.
Flo & Stan’s are also wonderful at highlighting and selling local artwork. From badges, necklaces, bags, clothes, prints, canvases to postcards, books and quirky vintage objects that every home should have. A new book of photographs by Irma Rose Pettitt has just gone on sale there along with gorgeous skull necklaces by Elle Sexton.
Wallspace Gallery has recently started selling Simon Whitcomb’s ‘Zombie’s in Southsea’ print.
Bonzo Studio is the new kid on the road and fully celebrating being part of a thriving creative scene by offering workshops in screen-printing, software and business development and also selling work by local artists and designers.
Thanks to all the traders on the road and of course not forgetting Parmiters, Bored, LJR’s, Garbo’s Salon, Head Hairdressing, Dead Man’s Glory, Bellamy’s Antiques and many more who also help promote artists and designers by collaborating, advertising, exhibiting and selling their work.

The latest exhibition from New Walls is all about the’best representations of Southsea’. The exhibition opens tonight – Thursday 6th October 2011 from 6pm at the One Eyed Dog. If you made it down to the last opening night, you’ll know how packed out it was so get there early to see local art and design showcased.
The original artwork for their new flyer is an A3 hand-drawn image, completed with a classic bic (a whole one!) by local Illustrator Ashley John.
It will be available as a limited run print after the opening night of New Walls. If you are interested in purchasing “Biro’s Are Shit Hot, But Southsea’s Better” as a print check out his blog or drop him an email – ashjohn99@hotmail.com

It’s always fun trawling through eBay for local vintage items, you never know quite what you’ll discover, such as this vintage glass Victorian tape measure. Southsea has a really strong fashion and craft scene and I imagine this item would find a welcome home very easily (although it is £85!).
“Some time in the Spring of 1831, a Mr William Wink began business as a `laceman` in Queen Street, near the Portsea Docks. The enterprise must have prospered for, when he died in 1857, Sarah Wink, we presume his widow, continued to trade at 112 Queen Street as a `lace manufacturer, milliner and dressmaker`. By 1865 the shop had been taken over by Frederick Wink and was described as `Wink & Co., Silk Mercers and Ladies` Outfitters The business was acquired by the John Lewis Partnership, who continued to trade from the same premises, despite being hit by a bomb in 1940″.

The wonderful Ooh la Lapin has another Tea and Cloth session this Thursday 26th May at Like a Tea Tray in The Sky, Osbourne Road, Southsea. To make things even more super special they will be doing a free felt making demo. Starts 6-9pm.

Local band MUNROE EFFECT deal in a unique brand of progressive, schizophrenic rock music characterised by passages of relentless epic noise and brooding intimate melody. They have a new album launch next Sunday 29th May at The Fat Fox. Grab a ticket before they all go.
” with a touch of At The Drive-In, some gorgeous sonic textures and aching vocals, this Portsmouth mob demand your attention from the off.” – Kerrang!
“all over the place – in a good way – with the odd, math-rock time signature mix-up pushing them away from local band mediocrity, and attention-grabbing vocals that drift between melodies and high-pitched screaming.” – Rock Sound
“jagged guitars and a pounding rhythm section … moments of shouting and lifting melodies mix and softer, intimate verses sound natural and unforced” – Big Cheese

We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:
- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.
- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.
- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!
- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.
- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.
Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.
