State of the Art (S.O.T.A) is a showcase of work created by fine art students completing their final year at the University of Portsmouth. The S.O.T.A artists have worked hard to establish themselves in and around the Portsmouth area and with a successful show and touring exhibition running throughout the summer of 2010 they have cemented their position as a rich source of emerging talent.
Each member of State of the Art has a unique and original approach to their practice which is reflected in the diverse array of work produced. Ranging from painting, sculpture and installation to performance, photography and film, State of the Art 2011 promises to be an exciting and innovative exhibition of contemporary fine art.
In order to make the summer show as stimulating as possible, the S.O.T.A team have been organizing a variety of fund-raising events, with all contributing donations going towards the numerous preparations needed for the upcoming exhibition in June. As well as the prospect of making some cash for the cause, we hope that these events offer an opportunity for State of the Art to establish themselves within the local community, and most of all, by uniting the cultural pleasures of art and music, we can hopefully help to develop a thriving art scene in Portsmouth to be very much proud of.
Above The Blue Gallery, Port Solent is hosting an exhibition of work produced by the University of Portsmouth’s BA Illustration degree students. The students have been invited to submit work for the exhibition, which will be assessed by a panel of 3 judges including a local artist (to be confirmed) and the best & most compelling pieces will be selected for display. All work is for sale too, so a chance to get in at ground level and collect original art from the next generation of artists.
Garbo’s Hair Salon have turned a wall space in their Albert Road branch into an art gallery. There will be a monthly exhibition of work by BA Fine Art students at The University of Portsmouth. Jimie Russell at Garbo’s said “we have always had a vision to do something with the space and felt that promoting local artists was a great way to do this”. Last year the space was used to promote the Southsea Deck Your Chairs project.
Nick Forbes is now in his final year and has worked with other students to get a rotation of work featured. “This is a great opportunity to get student work viewed around the city”.
The first student featured is Steve Chivalry with a piece of work entitled ‘When You Know You Love Them’. It was made using an old cardboard box. Steve work uses a lot of different materials and he tries to incorporate installation, sculpture and painting.

All artists work featured at Garbo’s will be for sale and you can see the work from today at 11-13 Albert Road, Southsea.
Sam Stockley is a very busy person indeed. A full-time student of BA Media & Entertainment Technology and editor in chief of Ballpoint Zine. He has just released issue 4 and aims to highlight the creative work produced by students at The University of Portsmouth.
“BallPoint Zine is the online home for the creative community of Portsmouth University. Born in April of this year, the interactive web-zine publishes student photographers, illustrators, writers, animators and much more. If it’s creative, then BallPoint celebrates it! In just four issue’s thirty students have been featured and, as a result, an exciting creative network of students in this city has started to form.
BallPoint is very keen to make connections with interesting, exciting and creative local brands, blogs and businesses…so get in touch.”
A documentary film about the decline of Portsmouth as a traditional seaside resort has won first prize for three student film-makers who graduate this week.
The University of Portsmouth students won the award for ‘best documentary’ at the Inspire Film Festival for their graduate film ‘The Last Resort’ which received critical acclaim from the judging panel including legendary film critic, Barry Norman. The film explores the decline of the Southsea as a traditional seaside resort told from the perspective of an elderly sea-swimmers group, a sea-front cafe manager and the owner of a model village.
The 16 minute film made by Russell Oastler, David Kinnaird and Lucas Way has since been picked up by the Sunday Times Short Film Community, an online showcase for the work of new film-makers which goes live in August.
The film explores the declining fortunes of The Big Wheel Cafe at Clarence Pier and Southsea’s model village, run by Mike Armet, who owns the attraction on Southsea Esplanade.
The film also introduces a group of Southsea die-hard swimmers who take a dip in the Solent’s chilly water 365 days a year. Some have been swimming there for over 30 years and even swim on Christmas Day. Sadly one of their group, 86 year old Dorothy Browning, passed away during the making of the documentary and the film has been dedicated to her memory.
Russell, who has just returned from work-experience on a professional short film, said it was never his plan to be a documentary film-maker but enjoys the unplanned nature of the medium.
“I like the idea that you don’t really know what might happen in a documentary – it could be something totally unexpected,” he said.

A new show kicks off the University of Portsmouth summer shows season and it’s a cracker.
It’s called State of the Art, a name which reflects the difficult position fine art/creative students find themselves in.
In a time when funding is being cut across the board, and, as is so often the case, the creative courses tend to be the first to suffer. It will feature a number of artists who create work spanning a broad spectrum, from painting and sculpture to film, animation, performance and relational art.
State of the Art will also move ‘out into’ the local community of Portsmouth. Various art workshops will be held in specific locations in and around Portsmouth.
The exhibition features work by 2nd year BA Fine Art students.

We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:
- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.
- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.
- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!
- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.
- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.
Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.
