Sorry about the last minute notice but The Cellars at Eastney are holding the first heat of their All About The Song 2010 competition tonight! This year’s All About The Song has even better industry connections than last year with direct links for the winning tune to hit the eyes and ears of the BBC Introducing crowds. For only a quid entrance fee you can support the artist you genuinely feel is the best on the night: with names like Ed Perry, Andrew Foster, Becky Jerams and Huw Olesker gracing the bills. The winner will receive a trophy, £100 and the chance to perform at The Kings Theatre Gala in September and Gunwharf Quays Fireworks in November.
They will also receive a gift bag of goodies from Nevada Music and a meal for 2 at a Gunwharf restaurant. Plus, of course, the chance to say that they were the winner of a competition judged by respected industry figures including BBC… Introducing.

Anglo-Canadian bluesman Harry Manx arrives in the UK later this month for short tour in support of his new album Bread And Buddha which is due for release on November 16th. As part of the tour Harry Manx will be performing at The Cellars at Eastney in Southsea on Monday November 30th, opening for Bob Cheevers. Tickets are £5 Adv / £6 door, for more information see The Cellars website and www.harrymanx.com.
“Ry Cooder is as good a point of reference as any for newcomers to Manx. But while such comparisons may work to describe Manx’s fretwork, the raw sensuality of his sound is all his own. Rarely has folk blues sounded as hauntingly beautiful.” Chicago Sun Times

Some more photos from Halloween at The Cellars in Eastney. I’ve put more up over at Forever Circling.

Last Saturday was yet another winner. A bunch of us went to The Cellars in Eastney for the Wolfman Vs Dracula Halloween Special with Support from Theory 77. Unfortunately we missed Mike (Theory), and were told it was his best set to date. Damn. Wolfman vs. Dracula played a gruesome set and Black Moranis played the night out with a really heavy set. Very good indeed.
True to form we carried on, crashed The One Eyed Dog and partied till the sun came up and we had to get back in our graves and slowly die some more the next day. Check out my Flickr for a few more photos of the evening.
Strong Island favourites and Southsea’s own Hearts of Oak will be supporting Charly Coombes and The New Breed at the Cellars at Eastney on Saturday 24th. Charly Coombs (younger brother of Gaz Coombs and part time member of Supergrass) will be bringing his band The New Breed to the Cellars to play what is their third only gig to date. Spitdust and The Lonely Cardinals will also be supporting. Tickets are £7 advance and £8 on the door.
For more information check the Facebook event.
On Saturday 25th five of Portsmouth’s finest bands play as their favourite bands at the Cellars at Eastney:
At Last as THE KILLERS
Dirty Sky Jones as WEEZER
When Duty Calls as NEW FOUND GLORY
Atlas as BIFFY CLYRO
Medison as JIMMY EAT WORLD
Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets are only £4. For more information see the Facebook event and the Cellars website.
2008 was quite a year for Birmingham’s Blakfish, after playing almost 200 shows in over 10 countries, releasing their mini-album “See You In Another City” on highly respected UK independent label Big Scary Monsters to much critical acclaim, receiving 4th Best British New Comer in Rock Sound readers poll, NME’s ones to watch for 2009 and a 4 K review in Kerrang. Their debut single, “Jeremy Kyle Is A Marked Man”, garnered a whirlwind amount of press including being featured by four different Radio One presenters, Colin Murray, Huw Stephens, Mike Davies (The Lock Up) & Daniel P Carter.
Blakfish and Colour will be performing at The Cellars at Eastney on 22nd June, doors open at 8pm and tickets are £6 in advance. For more information see www.thecellars.co.uk.

Portsmouth based band Loz Bridge And The Box Social have got a gig coming up next week on the 26th May at the Cellars in Eastney supporting the legendary blues piano player Jon Cleary. There’s still a few tickets left so if you want to check them out get in contact with Loz on their MySpace.
A quick last minute reminder that Fresh Legs are playing tonight at The Cellars at Eastney. The doors open at 8pm and £6 a ticket. In support will be Southampton band Venice Ahoy plus Tigre Bite Tigre and Repollo.

We have some great news about our PRIMARY phonography exhibition (find out all the details here) that we can now announce:
- The deadline for submissions has now been extended to Sunday 4th March. We have had some incredible submissions but want to set aside more time to make the exhibition something really special.
- The competition is now open to up to 10 submissions from each individual. With the ability to capture many photos on your phone over the next two months we we want you to not feel restricted to just three. The same rules apply about the photos conforming to compositions using the primary colours though. If you have already submitted feel free to send more photos over as and when you please.
- The exhibition will be hosted by Albert Road’s own Bonzo Studio who are also partnering up with us in the creation of the exhibition space. More news on this soon!
- Finally, we will be running a competition as part of the exhibition where the best three photos submitted will win some incredible prizes. We will be announcing the prizes available very soon but got to say, these will be the best prize haul we have ever offered.
- We will be putting together a poster for the exhibition that will be on sale on the opening night. The poster will feature some of the best submissions and all profits from the sales will go to a local charity (details to follow soon). Due to this we need to say that any photos submitted to PRIMARY will involve you giving us permission to use them for commercial purposes, if you do not want your photo used in this way simply let us know via email.
Well, that is it for now! We really hope to drum up as much coverage locally for PRIMARY in the next couple of months so if you could Facebook/Tweet/+1 about the exhibition we would really appreciate it. We would love this exhibition to be a real reflection of the whole population of Portsmouth with everyone taking part and feeling involved.

Righto chaps, it’s time to clean shave your boat race and get that mighty moustache on the grow in support of Movember for The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research. For 30 days of November you can help support and raise awareness through selflessly parading your top lip for charity.
You can sign up yourself, as I’m sure many of you already have, or you can join the Strong Island team and seek out sponsorship as a team. Through the Strong Island Movember page you can ask people to join the group, make donations, upload photos and post updates via the MoSpace page, Facebook and Twitter.

The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male specific cancers – prostate and testicular cancer. The funds raised are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research. Together, these channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programmes in line with our strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.
