The 14m² exhibition consists of 14 photography students from the University of Portsmouth. As part of their degree they are required to curate an exhibition from scratch; picking and gaining a location, raising funds, organising the display and all the other elements required for such an event. The work featured in the exhibition is based around the theme of territories; these spaces can be as large or as small as they wish, with the dimensional, territorial and geographical boundaries flexible. The various photographers will be displaying their work in ways that best narrate their idea, including projections, installations and prints. The exhibition will be on display for 7 days at Bonzo studio.
On the opening night preview, expect a friendly atmosphere at Bonzo studio where you can chat to the photographers and enjoy entertainment in the form of an acoustic set by one of the exhibiting photographers, Alice Chidgey. Portfolios of each photographer will be on display to browse through, allowing the chance to enjoy a wide variety of their work.
During the following week, the exhibition will be open to the public and each day at least two photographers will be at Bonzo studio to talk about the work and answer any questions you may have had. These times will be available from the opening night at Bonzo or found on the 14m² Facebook group.
The exhibition will take place from the 10-17th December at Bonzo studio, with an opening night preview on 9th December from 6 – 9pm.

A few months ago we featured local artist Pete Codling including his work in progress at Space, Eldon Building at The University of Portsmouth. I was lucky enough to take a few more pics of his work in development earlier this week but also found out that someone broke into the room on the 20th September and stole his laptop, sketchbook, mobile phone along with a camera. If anyone can help Pete solve this crime then please contact him at pete@petecodling.co.uk
The building, which will be demolished in November along with this final artwork, was actually Codling’s old studio space when he was a student at Portsmouth College of Art in the late 1980s.
This ‘charcoal epitaph’ is a personal way for the artist to say good bye to the building but also to celebrate the creativity of many artists, designers and musicians who have used this space over the last fifty years. This drawing on the main wall will be nearly ten metres by five meters with other smaller walls being included in the composition. The artwork will be inspired by classical mythology from his travels in the Mediterranean and will refer to Portsmouth and the history of the building.
If anyone wants to see the development of the artwork on the walls then please pop down during the day at Space, Eldon Building, Winston Churchill Avenue, Portsmouth.

Friday was the launch night of the University of Portsmouth’s Showtime 2011 event at the Eldon Building featuring work from foundation through to final year graduating students on creative courses including fashion, fine art, 3D, graphic design, illustration, tv production, computer game design, etc. The evening was very busy with people catching the two fashion show either live or via the live feed or wandering around between the different floors checking out the exhibitions of work. Particular personal favourites were the 3D computer games demos (amazing), the meat cushions in 3D, the (mockumentry?) music producer film in TV, dressage horse stills and a book about the Wedgewood Rooms in photography plus the store in illustration with loads of cool zines, badges, prints and more. Props to the tv production crew who had loads of ice cold beers and fan heaters too which made the hot evening even better.
Below are a random handful of photos from Friday but we’ll be highlighting some of the students and their work over the next couple of weeks…lots to be proud of when it comes to the amazing work and students from the University. If you have any photos from Showtime and want to contribute them to Strong Island get in touch.
P.S. Don’t forget you can still see the work yourself until the end of the week, check the link above for full details.
