Paul Gonella – Co-Founder & Photographer/Filmmaker

Coming predominantly from a skateboarding and film making background I’ve been progressively falling in love with photography over the last 20 years. Although not principally the subject of my photography, skateboarding and it’s inherent eye for forgotten or ignored views of the everyday world definitely has a strong undercurrent in my own personal perspective as is time and it’s effects on the physical world and the subsequent emotional repercussions.

Ben Mills – Contributor & Events Organiser

I’m a former roadie and club DJ with a passion for music and football, i’m an avid Pompey fan and general sports enthusiast. I’m co-founder of Little Johnny Russells and co-owner of The Belle Isle down here in Southsea. My latest project is Victorious Festival of which i’m a founder, curator and director alongside studying an events degree.  I’ve been known to organise an event or two previously too, regarding the social side of living in this fair city.

Claire Sambrook – Contributor & Portsmouth University Lecturer

Heading to London in the 80’s enabled a thorough understanding of media and design whilst working with leading photographers and editors. A wealth of experience was gained in advertising and TV. Freelance photography and voluntary teaching for 3 years before working in web design and image consultancy with clients such as U2, Prince and Frank Zappa’s Estate. Currently a lecturer at Portsmouth University and also involved in running projects that showcase the creative elements of the city with students and local artists/designers.

I love doing things differently just to piss people off. Adore my old dog Twm and always have a camera with me.

Charlie Thompson – Contributor & Bon Viveur

If there is one thing that gets me going it’s cooking. Originally from Portsmouth but having spent a large wedge of my life living in Paris and Barcelona, the love of creating good food runs deep. You will find me at my happiest in my kitchen, with a large glass of red, BBC 6 Music in the background and something bubbling away in front of me.

Lou Bush – Contributor & Artist

Im Lou also known as ‘ooh la lapin’ my alter ego. I spend most of the day making and crafting in my studio at the back of a tiny house. I have soft spot for taxidermy owls and listening to Americana and Folk music. My perfect day in Southsea is visiting the Butterfly House followed by chips and beer on the beach. Then stopping off on Albert Road to do some shopping.

Stu Barker – Contributor

I had been a regular visitor to Strong Island since it began in 2008 so I was really happy when Paul and Tristan asked me to join the team. Through Strong Island I’ve been able to forge some great links around Portsmouth and Southsea, as well as taking part in some great projects including the Road to Blissfields and compiling the Strong Island Calendars. I’m looking forward to playing a part in continued success of Strong Island.

Portsmouth Tricorn Centre: A Photographic Inspiration – New Strong Island Website Launched

For the 2014 Portsmouth City Museum exhibition, Tricorn: Controversy in Concrete, marking the 10 years since the demolition of the Portsmouth Tricorn Centre we asked the people of Portsmouth to submit their photos of the city’s iconic Brutalist structure. Over 500 images were submitted by more than 30 photographers, of these 100 were put together in to a community photography panel that went in to the exhibition.

From the outset the Tricorn was considered a likely source of creative inspiration for photographers throughout its history and the submitted photography for us proved this opinion. The light and shadow, the lines and corners of the building, all were captured in creative ways by photographers both from Portsmouth and the rest of the UK. Many of the images were shot with 35mm and medium format film.

We wanted to, for the first time, bring all of this beautiful imagery together online with a new website, we’re happy to say that the website is now complete and live. This website is home to an ever growing selection of the best imagery of the much loved & hated building that dominated the city skyline from 1966 to 2004.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their photography. If you would like to submit your own images please EMAIL us. The website can be found at:

Strong Island Calendar 2015

You should all be well aware that over the last year we have been compiling a calendar using photographs submitted to us by you, the Strong Island readers. We are really excited by our 2015 edition, I didn’t think it was possible but the bar has been raised yet again!

The calendar again features photography submitted throughout 2014 from local photographers. The calendar is full colour printed A4 and folds out and hangs so that one side of A4 contains the month’s photos and the other side has a large format calendar perfect for keeping your important dates through the year.

£1 of each calendar sale goes to the Alzheimer’s Society Portsmouth based services. They are the UK’s leading care and research charity for people living with dementia and their carers.

The calendars are still only available as a pre-order from our online shop HERE. We are expecting to have them in hand by next Thursday. They are priced at £10 each if you collect from Strong Island Co, 12 Highland Road, Southsea. Postal orders cost £12 each and international postal orders cost £14 each.

I guess it’s about time we share with you some more of the amazing photographs which have been included this year.
